We are going in April 2013 for a week to check out Florence & Charlotte SC and then a spot or two in N Carolina. I would like to live within a 40 min or less trip. I also love Chincoteague, VA, but it is not feasible. Thanks for you input Been There.

No need to be jealous, get an education and have a skillset in demand.

You're an exception to the norm. Paying cash and having a goal of being debt free should be more common. I make a little less than half of what you make, but I paid off my mortgage 6 years ago and clipped all but one credit card that I only keep in order to maintain my FICO above 740, even though I hope to never need it. And being debt-free, I probably won't ever need it even if I lost my job and was out of work for a year, year and a half.
According to all the bitterness and people bitching about section 8 condos and obama phones, this must be very rare indeed.

$158K with a basic security clearance. I do clerical work. Most people I know earn between $110k-250k as an individual. The CEO of company apparently makes around $1.7 million a year
There's no way a person could live in Fairfax County for under $100k. My mortgage payment alone is $4100 a month and then I have car payments too.

Visiting my parents who live in McLean. They don't want me
to take the job in China. I've been mulling it over. On the
one hand, my Mandarin is terrible (haven't spoken much of it
since I was a kid). Though I've heard good things about quality
of life + girl/guy ratio might tip in favor of a young guy trying
to enjoy his life =)

to take the job in China. I've been mulling it over. On the

B.S, I make 42k a year and live just fine in Fairfax, I paid my car in cash (used 05 accord), my mortgage payment on my townhouse is $1,300 monthly (principal, interest, tax, insurance, & hoa). All my expenses are right around $2,000 per month. So no, you do not have to make 100k+ a year to live in Fairfax.

I think he was implying that Shanghai's ratio of female-to-male was
a lot better than other areas (which it is). I think the obsession with
being gay is an American thing. It's rare to see gay people over in China, but not here.

Oh god, Florence....
When I was younger I went with my mom and two of her work friends on a road trip from hell because Florence was apparently renowned as the Mecca of dental work, especially dentures. You instantly knew the reputation was somewhat deserved because the hotels on the way into town had signs saying "welcome dental patients."
As a kid, I found it fascinating that there seemed to be nothing but strip malls and dental offices, and NOTHING else.
I'm genuinely curious as to what it is like these days.
