Wild Boar in Fairfax? Sooner then you think-
Posted by: curious ()
Date: November 13, 2012 01:20PM

Today, the wild pigs that are closest to [NOVA] are living around Catlett, about 10 miles southwest of Manassas, according to Mike Dye, a biologist for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. In five to 10 years, the species could make its debut inside the Beltway, he says.

...

These pigs, which can weigh as much as 200 pounds, dig and root around in the soil in their search for tubers, insects and other food. A patch of ground visited by a small herd looks like a bulldozer has worked it over. There has been no research on the effects of Northern Virginia’s pigs on native species, but the experience of other states suggests that trouble might be brewing.

...

Dye says that an immediate and aggressive eradication effort could remove all of Northern Virginia’s wild pigs and that it’s best not to wait too long. In five years, he says, “it might not be possible.”

Yet Virginia has no plan for stopping the pigs’ advance. Virginia’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has jurisdiction over livestock, while the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is responsible for wildlife. Wild pigs represent a gray area. Neither agency has been given a budget or a mandate to begin eradication.

Yeah, my first thought as well - I wonder if boar is like pork or deer or bear or raccoon or groundhog or something else like that?

Yeah, googling for the taste suggests there is as much chance as not that the meat will not be palatable.

=======

In other news I do not see any value in "hunting for sport" nor would ever do it. Have no problem with hunting for food, especially so if that is pretty much the ONLY way of getting the food, but for sport seems...wrong.

But this has little to do with eating wild boar, so I'll take fingers away from keyboard...

[I have hunted for food and stopped when I looked at a couple squirrels sitting in bags in the back seat of the car and couldn't answer the question "Why did you do that?". So I stopped. If I was somewhere alternatives were not available I would readily restart]

Wild boar are males. Females are sows. They taste like pork. I love pork.
I hope the wild pigs move into Muslim neighborhoods.

I was at a party in Florida and the put one on a spit and it was pretty good. I have two brothers in Texas and they have a major problem with them tearing-up there property. They spend a lot of time shooting them to keep the population down.

Not sure why you'd have to go to Georgia to hunt hogs. They are everywhere else in the southeast. You probably drive by 50k hogs on your way.

There are no wild boars in Loudoun. We are talking about feral pigs. I used to see them regularly around Farmwell Road in the 80s and 90s. Once, while biking, I came about 20 feet away from one male, with tusks, about 200 pounds, with two sows at his side, happy as can be. He saw me, snorted, and stared at me as I slowly biked by; the two sows ran away, but the male stood his ground. It was a little scary.

I bet you they taste good.

Pigs have a right to survive. What a load of shit. Be a man and wrestle one for your bullshit domain. Chances are you are twice as fat as the pig.
It's natures way of telling you something's wrong.

If there is one thing white people are good at, its eradicating a species. Just ask the dodo bird.

Wild boar does not taste very good. What a lot of people do is capture them and feed them corn for a couple months before slaughtering them.

If you have oak trees, the boar will tear up your yard to eat the acorns.

Invasive species that may well have excaped from pig pens & other domesticated species hundredes of years ago & more recent too. Then cross breeding, they find a way, unchecked and a major problem in many states. Esp southern states: FL, GA TX AL MS, LA. Hunting permits for them are common place. But, I've seen them along the GW pkwy, Fairfax county (inside 495, not far from the Potomac River Gorge, about 10 medium size, ripping a hillside up rooting around. I am not the only one that saw them driving by that morning. I was wondering, what farmer is missing these pigs? or better question, Wheres the farm inside the beltway that is looking for 10 large, black pigs, boar or whatever... I'm still not sure if they were "wild boar" (?, I mean WTF, some one tell me.)

In any case, they can be deadly too. They can, or will attack and injure people, esp. if cornered, feel threatened or sometime for no reason at all.

I went hunting for wild pigs in the Osceola of Florida. It was a dried
up swamp then because of drought. We talked with some local good ol'boys
and they were more than happy to tell us where to find pig trails. I had
never hunted them before and was looking forward to a cookout with our
friends in Jacksonville. We never saw any pigs in the two days we were
hunting but this is not exactly the easiest area to hunt I've seen.
We did find some pig trails though and the ground looked as though somebody
had a rotor tiller that was 50 feet wide and had dug up nearly square inch
of ground for as far as you could follow their trail into the brush. Much
of it was impassable and there were also rattle snakes and banana spiders
that keep you on your toes. We decided to stay near the dirt roadways and
play it safe. Someday perhaps we'll be able to hunt them in Fairfax. I
can't wait to hear the Yuppies screaming when they have herds of them
destroying their property. Remember the assholes who didn't want us to
hunt deer before they became such a problem?

Oh yes, and these peccaries? adore all those expensive bulbs and gorgeous flowers all over the pampered estates around here! Soon "deer lettuce" will be the source of fierce battles between the hungry pigs and the current "owning" "deer squatters rights" tenants of these properties! And with the new tax cuts looming for the rich, they won't be able to continually replace all their prize petunias and peonies after the nightly hordes gobble up all of their specimen plant expensive garden goodiesall year long!

So, why not issue open season licenses to hunt all these (deer and pigs) as game animals for the purpose of reducing the populations and dressing them out and feeding the hungry humans in need of food after all these disasters--set up FEMA procesing centers and FEMA food kitchens that cook and serve it up anywhere it is needed!

Pigs/Boars will be needed to consume the dead humans when the apocalypse occurs.
They sense the end and are approaching cautiously to this location. Survivors will have to fight for food and territory.
Human flesh will be the most important and prized commodity.

I would like to point out that pigs eat road kill and any other dead animal they find. Rabies is rampant in Virginia and so is Lyme disease. I wouldn't want my dog to tangle with one of them let alone a herd. Consuming wild pig meat is not a wise
idea IMHO.

They can and will tear up everything you have on the ground. They will also kill dogs and cats and attack humans if cornered. If you think this a joke then check out some of the wild pig videos on YouTube.

@buzzlightyear, you are so wrong. these pigs do not eat road kill. they can get rabies like most animals, but not the way you think. they find their food by tearing up fields to find it. you can eat these pigs, and theres no risk doing so. i have friends that have pig hunted out of state for years, and have been very successful. they can be cut into cops, baon, made into sausage, or pork roast. ive eaten wild pig numerous times, and its quite good. i dont want them in va, because they are so destructive. if you think the deer population is bad, just wait. these pigs reproduce 3-4 times a year, and have large litters. unlike deer that only produce once a year, and usually only 1 fawn, sometimes 2. they are 100x more destructive than deer, and can reach over 200 pounds. imagine hitting one that size with your car. i heard that texas has to kill 80% of them each year, just to keep the population from growing. thats impossible. hunting them is the only way to control them, and it has to done aggressively. open season, year round, no license or bag limit. otherwise, it will get out of control like it has further south.

Another NOVA asshole worried about his car. Your car can do the same damage to a child. Who's the pig?
Just like you, pigs are enviable.

"They can be cut into cops". Thanks for the laugh. Here's a video of
a wild pig eating a roadkilled rabbit. Feast your eyes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbQzZY5L1RI

You can eat all the wild pig you wish but I'll pass on taking a risk of
rabies, Lyme disease, trichinosis, or whatever the Hell else they carry.
I love pork but please, only USDA inspected for me.

You are a moron. Do some reading on these suckers. There are over 3 million of them in TX alone and they are destroying crops all over the country (eating eggs of Virginia's birds, etc.). They are NOT native -- they were brought here by settlers centuries ago (they think Spaniards). Shoot em...
