Why are Democrats reluctant to admit they are Democrats?

A ton of people who vote for Democrats, stick up for Democrats, and vocally support Democrats won't actually admit to being Democrats. For whatever reason, they feel the need to label themselves "Independents." What gives? Are they ashamed to be Democrats or do they think that if people who are really independents hear other independents supporting Democrats it may sway some votes?
Many actual liberals consider Democrats just as corporatist as most Republicans. They vote for them because what are they gonna do, vote Republican? They defend their policies because, as imperfect and watered down as they tend to be, they're usually a start in the right direction at least.
Republicans may be wrong most of the time (in my opinion), but at least they stand together for something. It makes it easy to identify with. "Hey! I hate paying taxes! I'm a Republican!"

Today's Democrats are corporatist mutations of McGovern Democrats. And, McGovern Dems are imposters of the Real Democrats of FDR, Harry Hopkins, and the New Deal.
The two parties began moving together after WW2. It didn't take long before there was very little difference at the very top. Bill Clinton removed even that token camouflage and revealed that both serve the banksters and don't even pretend otherwise. The only difference is in marketing. Token rhetorical differences and select ignorant demographic groups are assigned to one or the other party to exploit. Amerika is a One Party Tyranny with a token two-party facade.
The Founding Fathers' wisdom in restricting voting rights is shining brighter and brighter every year. They knew that only white men with private property should be allowed to vote. Without question, every group, beyond white men, permitted to participate has clearly degraded the political process. Great Society and McGovern Democrats are the biggest polluters of the political process, period.
With that in mind, today's Democrats have every reason to be ashamed.
