Exactly! Thos times were those times, it was what appears to us now as a crazy era. The Catholic church (as we see it now) was wrong in the approach. Yep, the Catholic Church has allowed and in the past encouraged horrible crimes. No question. However, the Catholic Church's fundamental principle is based on peace, forgiveness, and love.

Now, what is Islam's fundamental principle? From what I've been able to gather it is based on forced conversion, sublimation of women, the end justifies the means.

But regardless, if someone robs a bank, is it ok because others have been robbing banks forever? Just because the Catholic Church has committed sins and allowed it's officials (priests) to commit sins does that mean it's ok for followers of Islam to commit sins? If something is wrong, it is wrong!

The Spanish Inquistion and the Crusades were a long fucking time ago, and its kinda silly to compare 500 year old history to modern events.

Islam is like most religions- a lot of people are born into it and do it from a sense of tradition without being fanatical and bothering everybody about it.

The difference is, there are lot more fanatical Islamic extremists in 2011 than there are from any other religions. People can talk about Westboro Baptist and some of the many other goofball sects, but the truth is America is not churning out suicide bombers the way Pakistan and the Middle East is.

I have Middle Eastern friends and they all seem to realize there are a lot of wackjobs from their homelands. You can blame culture, politics, poverty- whatever, it is was it is.

We owe everyone a fair chance, but we shouldn't be so blind in our attampts for political correctness that we ignore the rabble rousing, American hating bullshit that some of these ingrates bring over with them.

And remember - most of the "Crusades" runs were brought about by a Country. Not the Church. While the Church endorsed them - the general Crusades were called by rulers that wanted to get rabble-rousers out of the country and tearing up someone else's country. While I still hold the Church at fault, most of the time the motivations were purely political, with the 'heathens' used as a rallying cry.

I've gotta disagree. The Dark Ages and the Crusades happened during the same timeframe. During the Dark Ages, the Muslim world actually experienced its Golden Age. While Europeans were killing each other over petty differences, wallowing in their own filth, and ruled by religion and superstition, the Muslims were making great advances in math, science, medicine, chemistry, etc.

I reference the same age, the Ottoman and Persian Empires when people want to dismiss an entire culture. Islam could be going through a dark time, and I hope that is all it is.

My issue is this- Christianity has comparitively rehabbed itself and there are vastly fewer crimes of violence, bombings and widespread insanity that is being justified by Christians. There are many being justified by Islamists and an alarming percentage of the Muslim population.My point is a matter of security and reality, there are a lot more dangerous Muslims than Christians. Doesn't make them all bad, but we shouldn't be PC'd into ignoring what is happening.

People talk about Islam needing a reformation, for me, an agnostic, that is like showing up on a softball field and insisting everyone play hockey. Every religion has a right to their own beliefs and customs and any reform in Islam must come from within, not because you or I want it.

You can expect Islam to reform itself and come out of it's current Dark Age, but it may not. To expect such a reformation is to project your own beliefs and a historical paralell onto this small percentage of violent miscreants.As long as people are so willing to tolerate and exempt people from basic human expectations on treatment of women etc, nothing will change and the few bad actors in the Muslim community will run wild.

If you hold all religions to the same standard and regard, I've got to assume you would welcome a Westboro Baotist as a neighbor as soon as you would a Buddhist, Unitarian or Pentecostal. (Personally I prefer Buddhists, they are usually very mellow)
