Car blows up backing out of garage -- not likely

Anyone else think this story stretches credibility?

Lobbyist Ashley Turton found dead in vehicle at Capitol Hill home

By Paul Duggan and Theola Labbé-DeBose
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, January 10, 2011; 9:45 PM

A lobbyist married to a key White House aide was found dead early Monday in her sport-utility vehicle, which was heavily damaged by fire in the garage of the couple's Capitol Hill home, authorities said. The cause of her death was unknown.

Ashley W. Turton, 37, an energy company lobbyist and former chief of staff to Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro (D-Conn.), was found dead shortly before 5 a.m. in the SUV. The front end of the vehicle was charred and facing into the burning garage. The back end, less damaged than the front, was protruding slightly from the garage.

Turton, a mother of three small children, was the wife of Daniel A. Turton, 43, the White House's deputy director of legislative affairs for the House of Representatives. He is President Obama's point man on legislation moving through that body.

Investigators on Monday were trying to determine what happened a few hours before dawn at the couple's two-story brick home in the 800 block of A Street SE.

Police said in a statement that the 2008 BMW X5 "crashed into the interior of the garage," which faces Eighth Street. "After the impact, a fire started and quickly engulfed the entire garage as well as the automobile," the statement said.

One source familiar with the incident said "there didn't appear to be any major trauma" to Turton's body. Another official, Capt. Michael Farish of the D.C. police homicide unit, said, "We have no evidence of any obvious malfeasance in her death at this time."

Authorities said Turton's death might have resulted from the low-speed crash, an unknown medical situation preceding it, the fire, or some combination of the three. Her body was taken to the D.C. medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

...

Pete Piringer, a D.C. fire department spokesman, said neighbors called for help about 4:50 a.m. after they saw smoke and flames. The SUV was pointing into the garage at a crooked angle with its back end slightly outside.

Authorities said an autopsy might determine whether the incident occurred after Turton suffered "a medical event," one official said.

Emphasizing that investigators had not determined the facts, the official said Turton might have lost control of the SUV, resulting in a low-speed crash that could have ignited flammable substances stored in the garage.

Neighbors described hearing a crash followed by several popping sounds. They said the fire burned quickly. Julie Domenick, who lives two doors away from the Turton home, said she called 911 after her barking dog alerted her to the fire.

I thought it sounded suspicious, too. However, the car didn't blow up. It was pulling out of a garage, hit the wall, caught on fire and she was apparently unable to get out in time.

I assume it is a very small garage in the bottom of a townhome, probably made of cinder block. If the car had a gas leak and caught on fire, it's possible the garage door was narrow enough to prevent the driver from opening the car.

How it caught on fire? I have no idea. To me it would seem that the car must have had a fuel leak ahead of time that went unnoticed in order for it to burn that quickly.

Definitely suspicious, though, and worth a thorough investigation.

Then, the following day (Tuesday), a car trunk explodes in Arlington ...

Police and fire officials are investigating an explosion in the trunk of a vehicle in Arlington, Va., Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred on the 2100 block of S. 9th Street. The trunk of the white BMW with Virginia plates was destroyed, and the force of the explosion sent pieces of metal onto an adjacent road.

A witness on the scene said there was a loud boom and he felt his building shake.
Police said two men were seen running from the car. One person were escorted from the scene in handcuffs, but investigators said at this point he is a person of interest and was being questioned. Two other people, including the owner of the car, also were being questioned.

No injuries were reported.

Bomb-sniffing dogs and robots were brought in to search the area.
Rich Marianos, assistant special agent in charge of the Washington Field office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told the Associated Press that the initial investigation suggests the incident was neither criminal nor terroristic in nature. ATF has implemented a rapid response team to investigate such incidents.

Sounds like heart attack/stroke followed by impact to garage back and rebound.

Though she was young, what was she like physically?

Ha, you think that's weird? Many years ago my pops was commuting down the LIE, when suddenly in the oncoming lanes a car came to a halt, and a bunch of passengers bugged out. Him and his associates were all thinking: Wtf? When suddenly the suspect car blew up and was lifted off the ground like a freaking movie stunt.

I bet more people die here in mysterious car fires than anywhere else in the country. Just take this example:

Police: Woman found in burning car may have been a suicide

By Tom Jackman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, November 23, 2009 4:52 PM

Fairfax County investigators think that a woman who was found dead inside a burning sport-utility vehicle Saturday night might have killed herself by igniting and then sitting inside the burning SUV, police and fire officials said Monday.

The woman was identified as Verena T. Stutts, 43, of the 7100 block of Wayne Road in Annandale. She was found in the driver's seat of a Mitsubishi SUV after witnesses spotted the vehicle on fire about 8:10 p.m. in a parking lot of the Willow Oaks Corporate Center office complex, near Gallows Road and Route 50 in the Merrifield area, Fairfax Officer Bud Walker said.

The fire was intentionally set, Fairfax fire spokesman Dan Schmidt said, although he declined to reveal details about the fire's cause. Police did not release the cause of death pending the outcome of toxicology reports, but Walker said, "based on her personal history as well as the state of the scene, the detectives do not believe there was foul play." Walker said there was no evidence that anyone else was present.

Fairfax fire marshals and homicide detectives are investigating the case, both agencies said.

Why has this story fell off the radar of all the major newpapers? Where is Dan Turton? Where is the WH?

No stories since 1/13?

Was she leaving or coming home? Hard to crash in reverse?

What were the popping noise?

Was she cremated? When are the autopsy results?????

Keep this story alive........

She probably couldn't back up her SUV for shit (most people cannot), as a result backed into the garage at an angle and ran over a gas can on the floor.

Several BMW SUV owners have come forward and commented on vehicle fires. The spokesperson for BMW has addressed those questions just like any public relations official would by indicated there were a few "issues", but BMW has resolved them. However, there are many that are still reporting incidents. BMW may not have fully resolved their vehicle fire issues with the SUV model.

If there's a cover up, it's got to be on BMW's part. Certainly, they don't want this to turn into a P.R. nightmare for them.

With the little amount of information we have to work with, it's obviously a grand conspiracy where Barack Obama himself put some C-4 on her car and detonated it. Obviously she had some damaging information about him. But, instead of giving her something that would allow her to die quietly in her sleep, Obama, Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi decided the best thing to do was to kill her with a violent and very public explosion.

BMW is notoriously bad for blaming their customers first for issues related to major defects and then reluctantly taking ownership much later, usually only after a class action lawsuit has been filed or threatened.

Well, it does make it easier when the person who died was heading into work totally drunk off her ass. Sounds to me there were a lot of issues going on with her to have something like this happen.

Anyone else think this story stretches credibility?

NO. so i backed up "slowly" and my cars on fire. i get out.

i beleive their reports less and less

sounds like she's rich, beautiful, and would enjoy life with her girlfiredns or have any guys she wanted at a finger snap.

-------------------------------
i would said wwait, take two asperin, and see who's living in her house in a month

it is either them or who (sold it) to them who is involved !

follow the money. it's hard to hide a fucking house idn't it?

-----------------------------
i was sickened who knows how long or badly due to a dealer not doing a recall. allowed engine fumes and radiator fumes in passenger compartment in small but sure ammounts. long term exposure. broken seals and pipe that that car had already beenin for recall for
