Many years ago, in high school, my dumbass of a friend made a bet with some kid to fire BB pistols at eachother's arms from about 30-40 feet away. Little did he know, my friend took the BB's out of the other kid's gun, so he fired, and my friend pretended to get hit, but it was nothing. Then my friend picked up the BB gun, and he loaded a clip of BB's into it without the other kid seeing, then he shot him with it. Even from that distance, and fired from a basic air pistol, the BB embedded into the skin of his arm. Needless to say, any gun more powerful than a .177 BB is going to penetrate basic clothing at 50 ft. A thick, heavy leather jacket might stop a small round from that distance, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.
