Velvet Underground Tea Partier
Posted by: WingNut ()

I was never crazy about this band. They were always so adored by the critics and the wannabe brilliant audioheads. Yeah, "Heroin" is a good song, but I could do without all the praise lavished on them. A bunch of too smart for their britches NY'ers with attitudes and artsy pretensions. Fuck 'em!

Now one of the VU makes the news as being involved in radical politics. I would think it was Lou Reed and he was going to Libya or Cuba on behalf of Mumia or some similar crap, but its actually their drummer who is a Georgia resident and spoke with local news at a Tea Party.

What? Last thing I would expect from this crowd, but hey, some of the Ramones were hardcore repubs so I've been more surprised.

I don't know anything else about her political philosophy, for all I know she may be a Ron Paul Bilderberg conspiracist, who knows? But here she is- from Andy Warhol influenced darlings of the pointy headed New York, New York avant garde to a Georgia Tea Party granny. Strange.

STORY

"It's safe to assume that most Velvet Underground fans never imagined that "All Tomorrow's Parties" would end up referring to Tea Party rallies in Georgia.

The legendary band's followers and admirers are buzzing about reports that drummer Maureen "Moe" Tucker showed up at a Tea Party rally earlier this year and expressed her anger that the government is leading the country to socialism."

Moe Tucker was always an oddball. I read years ago that she was living in some small town somewhere working a retail job. That's gotta be hard to swallow, especially when the band she was in 40 years ago continues to sell records. And she always sorta looked like a man too. When Lou Reed first met her he said he wasn't sure what her gender was. I'm not surprised she's a weird, angry old lady.

I love the Velvet Underground albums, they were an amazing band whose sound was decades ahead of it's time.

I am not suprised. She is still anti-establishment by embracing a facet of the political establishment that is so controversial right now. Tea Partiers are crazy mo'fo-ers, i.e. Christine Witchy O'Donnell. Seems to me that the Velvet Underground fits in quite well with the batshit crazies of the Tea Party. I predict that Christine O'Donnell will be using G.G. Allin's song Sister Sodomy - Death And Defication as her campaign theme song, and at rallies, she will shit on a mannequin on stage and perform simulated sex acts on it.

As an artist, I could see why she would turn away from socialism, especially when you consider what Communism has done to the socialist concept. She wants to keep her identity.

Not that it would matter to him. Reportedly he used to have gay sex on Andy Warhol's sofa during Warhol's crazy drug-loopy parties. At the very least he crossed swords...whatever floats your boat I guess.

Good interview in a St.Louis newspaper
http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/atoz/2010/10/moe_tucker_interview_2010_politics_tea_party_velvet_underground_video.php

Q-Are you still involved in Tea Party activities?
A-I do my own protesting via email and postcards. Anyone who thinks I'm crazy about Sarah Palin, Bush, etc. has made quite the presumption. I have voted Democrat all my life, until I started listening to what Obama was promising and started wondering how the hell will this utopian dream land be paid for? For those who actually believe that their taxes won't go up in order to pay for all this insanity: good luck!

Q-What are some misconceptions that people have about Tea Parties (and their attendants) in general?
A-That they're all racists, they're all religious nuts, they're all uninformed, they're all stupid, they want no taxes at all and no regulations whatsoever. Those "arguments" are presented by the Dems in order to keep their base of uninformed voters on their side. In my opinion, as soon as you start name-calling, your opinion is immediately deemed invalid

Q- In the now-infamous videotape, you indicated that you're furious about the way we're being led toward socialism and "incredible waste of money" being spent. Could you elaborate a bit on these sentiments?

A- No country can provide all things for all citizens. There comes a point where it just isn't possible, and it's proven to be a failure everywhere it's been tried. I am not oblivious to the plight of the poor, but I don't see any reason/sense to the idea that everyone has to have everything, especially when the economy is so bad. I see that philosophy as merely a ploy to control.

My family was damn poor when I was growing up on Long Island. There were no food stamps, no Medicaid, no welfare. If you were poor, you were poor. You didn't have a TV, you didn't have five pairs of shoes, you didn't have Levi's, you didn't have a phone; you ate Spam, hot dogs and spaghetti. We all survived! I am not against food stamps, welfare or Medicaid, if only they would oversee these programs properly!

I am also against the government taking over the student loan program, car companies, bailouts and the White House taking control of the census (what the hell is that all about?); [about] any First Lady telling (I know, I know, "suggesting to") us what to eat, the mayor of New York City declaring "no salt" (screw you, pal!), the mayor/city commissioners of Anytown, U.S.A. declaring you can't fly a flag, can't say the Pledge of Allegiance and can't sing the National Anthem. I'm against a President dismissing any and all who dare to disagree; the water being turned off in (central) California, at [an] area where they've turned off the water because they want to save a one-inch fish -- turning that huge area of farming land into another dustbowl -- the insipid start of food supply control methinks! The government deciding what kind of lightbulbs we can use (all you "think green" people, three objections to this b.s.: 1) Those bulbs give off the light of a candle; 2) They're very expensive; 3) They have mercury in them - how the hell are we supposed to dispose of them?).

I am against the government now thinking about bailing out unions. The unions made the contracts which include insane pensions; the U.S. government didn't. I'm against the government closing down offshore drilling in the Gulf with one hand and with the other giving (lending?) Brazil money to help them do way deeper offshore drilling -- rather curious. I'm against a government that will not defend our borders; and on and on and on.
My anger stems from the unbelievable (criminal!) waste of money on pork and earmarks. It drives me nuts to see that X millions are being allocated to build a turtle tunnel, a donkey museum, a salamander crossing, etc, etc, etc. Billions spent every friggin' year on totally unnecessary crap so that these Congressbums can tell their constituents that they "brought home the bacon" and get re-elected. I'm sorry, but I don't want to pay for any Congress SOB's vote buying, and sure as hell not in these very very worrisome times!

Utopian dream land, govt.-controlled food supply, Anytown, U.S.A. declaring you can't fly a flag, say the Pledge of Allegiance and can't sing the National Anthem.

She's against government intervention in the auto industry, student loans- bailing out Wall Street and the unions.

She's against us banning offshore drilling then lending money to Brazil so they can do the same thing(but not in our backyard)

Sounds 100% normal to me..

There was no reason for the govt. to use banks as the "middle man" for the student loan program, and it saves money by cutting them out of the picture. The govt. didn't bail out unions, and if she didn't like TARP, she should bitch about Bush, then head down to the gulf coast and tell the locals her views on offshore drilling.

It's actually pretty funny that the teabaggers would take pride that someone like Mo Tucker, of all people, supports their stupid "platform".

Why is this such a bad thing? Many artists come to mind who utilize their position to demonstrate their political views. Bruce Springsteen immediately comes to mind.

I've had to learn to turn the other cheek with many of these artists - and not let their political influences get in the way of my music enjoyment.

It's not a bad thing. But Maureen Tucker? She's not famous, and the band she played in 40+ years ago wasn't mainstream and wasn't really even noticed until years after they broke up. What little public image they did have was a mysterious band of junkies and S&M freaks who hung out with Andy Warhol and openly sang songs about shooting heroin, prostitution, and transvestism. Not to mention, Mo was just the drummer.

I'm not criticizing Maureen Tucker as a musician- I love the Velvet Underground and consider them to be one of my favorite bands. But dropping her name as a celebrity spokesperson is about as meaningful as the Dems putting the bass player from Strawberry Alarm Clock on stage to talk about health care reform. No one really knows or cares who they are.

My views on health care are quite simple. I advocate the exlcusive use of aromatherapy. In fact, I am treating an anal fissure right now with some peppermint incense...

From 40+ years ago when Moe Tucker was actually part of a cool band. They were so hip and super-cool, none of 60s-hippies or British Invasion fans even knew who they were.
