The drop-off is normal as SNL’s ratings tend to soar during the final months of an election cycle, as last year's season premiere was situated.
Additionally, live ratings for entertainment programming has dropped significantly over the last year with streaming services causing a shift in viewer priorities and patterns. So, it is possible SNL actually will outperform most — if not all — primetime comedy series on broadcast TV last week in 18-49 demo, once NON LIVE ratings and viewership counts are tallied. Official national demo ratings were released today to subscribers, so, I am sure there will be more analysis of their season premiere viewership.
