Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Before buying pickup the drill feel how heavy(weight) it is. I use to work in HVAC and we had two drills.
A light weight drill that was easy pickup for screws and very easy tasks. Then a heavy weight drill that we could power through anything with. 65% of time we would favor the light drill. Just easier to pickup and handle.
DeWalt is probably the best, especially if you use it on a daily basis, but they are pricey. I think the best for the money is Hitachi. I would go with the 18 volt.
I got a ryobi drill and impact for about $120. Its not as powerful as some but the battery replacement is cheaper (I had a dewalt for years and $100 per battery was too much) I build cabinets and its good enough.

EXCUSE US?
Cary Weidemann, is this the kind of posted threads and such you like on FXU?
The batteries will die if its left to sit. Roybi, Makita are two good cheaper ones. Don't get a huge one, small and lite. Dewalt is a good one but expensive. I have a 9 volt have had it many years on the 2nd battery from Grainers 55 dollars for a replacement but well worth it. Light powerful to do all kinds of things and light easy to handle.
For trades work I had 12 14 and 18 volt Dewalts til I retired. Also have a 18 v Milwaukee, the battery died many years back 80 or so dollars to replace. it sits in its box. If Im in need of it bad I will spring for the battery. They last about 3 -4 years and the drill is powerful.
All the stupid anti freedom hating libtard bullshit aside.....Bosch makes the best. Makita and Hitachi are China bullshit. Hitachi is just a joke. Anybody that recommends those tools is a lib.

Hitachi KC18DGL 18V Lithium Ion Driver Drill & Impact Driver Combo Kit
Uses & Applications
Covered by Hitachi’s Lifetime Lithium Ion Tool Warranty, the KC18DGL 18V Lithium Ion Combo Kit combines the 18V Lithium Ion Driver Drill (model DS18DGL) and the 18V Lithium Ion Impact Driver (model WH18DGL) along with two 18V Lithium Ion batteries, a quick charger, a double sided Phillips bit and nylon bag for transport and storage. Hitachi’s signature ergonomic design for the tool bodies makes them extremely well-balanced and comfortable for extended use in any application. The DS18DGL 18V Lithium Ion Driver Drill is ideal to handle just about any task like boring large holes into wood or driving large lag bolts, yet its clutch allows the user to adapt to low-torque applications such as hardware installation or furniture assembly. The WH18DGL 18V Lithium Ion Impact Driver is the ideal cordless tool for heavier applications like tightening and loosening carriage bolts, driving lags and sinking screws. Additionally, it can drill into wood, metal and concrete. When the impact driver senses a certain amount of torque is needed, an internal mechanism automatically impacts, which sounds like a clicking noise. This mechanism provides the additional power needed to drive stubborn screws and bolts and tackle the most challenging applications.

Lithium Ion Battery & Charger Advantage
These tools are powered by 18V Lithium Ion slide-type batteries (models: BSL1815S and BSL1825) for fade free power, less weight and 3x the total battery life of traditional Ni-Cd batteries. Hitachi has optimized the overall design thanks to the slide-type Lithium Ion battery pack that eliminates the vertical cell battery chamber. This permits the handle to be ergonomically designed, resulting in improved comfort and greater control. The feel of the tool in hand reflects Hitachi’s detailed attention to balance, grip and pressure points; making these tool extremely comfortable to use. Hitachi Lithium Ion batteries continue to provide fade free power maintaining a steady charge throughout the charge cycle, which ensures the user will tap the full power during use.
The battery charger that accompanies this kit will charge 18V Lithium Ion slide-type batteries in about 35 minutes. The technology in the charger provides the Lithium Ion battery with overload and over-discharge protection so it won’t overheat or lose power; lending to the battery’s longer overall life.
Warranty Information
Covered by Hitachi’s Lifetime Lithium Ion tool body warranty, 2-year Lithium Ion battery warranty and 1-year Lithium Ion charger warranty for peace of mind
What's in the Box?
The kit comes complete with the DS18DGL Driver Drill, WH18DGL Impact Driver, two (2) 18V Lithium Ion batteries (models BSL1815S and BSL1825), a quick charger (UC18YKSL), a two-sided #2 Phillips driver bit (983006) - all contained in a durable carrying bag for easy transport and storage.

I absolutely love this set
By Evan on July 15, 2015
I absolutely love this set. The impact is a real workhorse. Powerful and light weight. I always reach for it to deal with any fastener. Drill is nice, though not overly powerful (I prefer a corded drill for most drill applications where I need a little oomph). I mostly just use it for pre-drilling holes, which is why buying them as a set is so handy. Using both drill/driver in tandem is much easier than swapping out bits, and pre-drilling is a good idea because that impact is so powerful, you might split whatever you are driving into if you don't.
Hitachi is often overlooked, but seems to be the best value to go to if you aren't looking to spend Milwaukee/DeWalt/Makita money.

Good combination kit
By Matt Hausig VINE VOICE on May 19, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I was very pleased with this combination kit. There is an impact driver, a drill, two battery packs and a charger. The kit also includes a bag to hold them all. Both the impact driver and drill are lightweight and I had absolutely no issues using them around the apartment for lightweight tasks. The charger charges quickly although the lights used to indicate status are a bit cryptic. Both the impact driver and the drill include an LED for illuminating work surfaces. While there is a bit of an overlap in functionality, the kit comes at a significant premium over getting these individually. Overall, these are well built and easy to use tools.

Excellent - 21V LiIon power in an 18V kit!
By ScOObydoo VINE VOICE on May 1, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
If you want the short version: Well made, 22V power from 18V batteries. The set has two batteries, a single light charger, a bag (which smells pretty bad). The tools have incredible torque, especially from an 18V setup. I have DeWalt tools with larger batteries that have the same kind of torque.
The kit is missing a simple bit set, and some other basics like a tool clip, but at under $200, this is an excellent buy. It had zero problems helping me take an old bathroom apart

Very nice, but just one more thing…
By Tyler Forge on May 3, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Both of these tools are very good but are not beastly tools for powering ½” bits through concrete. They are good for light construction, household chores, and jobs where you need a driver or impact driver but won’t need to brace your feet and put your weight into it. Also, any comments I make later is just wish list sorta stuff that I hope Hitachi considers for future models. To test these tools, I did a normal bunch of spring time de-winterizing chores and tortured them a little at the work bench. No furniture was built, no sheds were raised.
The outside of the tools is a rugged green hard plastic with a patterning of softer black plastic that’s easy to grip. The hard plastic is that rugged stuff that’s resistant to just about everything. The black stuff is applied in what, at first, looks like a pretty pattern. The pattern actually is kinda pretty, but it’s also in the right spots where you grab or press the tool. Both tools have those handy little LED that light up the work surface a bit. Every power tool should have those LEDs.
The driver drill is reversible variable speed with two gearings, fast and slow. It has a clutch for adjusting the torque. The second highest torque setting is light enough that I can hold the chuck still with just my hand. I’m only medium man-strong, so that’s no huge toque. It makes sense though because any more and I’d give way before the clutch did. The highest torque setting is direct drive, no clutch. If the motor can’t turn then it cuts out after a moment. Nice safety feature that keeps us from burning the thing out. Yes, I tested this, twice. The drill is unharmed.
The impact driver is also reversible variable speed.Read more ›

Capable drill/driver combo comes with two Li ion batteries
By Medianvalued VINE VOICE on April 29, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is a great battery powered drill/driver combo set. On the plus side you get two 18 volt lithium batteries (you need two - in case one is recharging while you want to keep working). One is a 2.5 amp hour battery and the other one isn't - I think it has to be just 1.0 amp hours. Providing one of the batteries with a lower capacity seems to be becoming the norm these days - my Porter Cable 6 tool combo set came with one battery having a third of the capacity of the other. I guess this is a way of saving a little money. The set comes with an attractive bag to stash stuff in - not just "tool guy" attractive but actually attractive. The impact driver works well - if you haven't used an impact driver yet, you should. Impact drivers can drive the toughest of screws deep into tough lumber and you really don't feel any torque and your arms don't get tired. The driver drill is also pretty solid and has all the power and features that you would expect from a 1/2" chuck drill. Both have a tiny built in light that illuminates where you are working. Now I have to confess that I am something of a savage when it comes to drills - I could happily do all my drilling work with just my impact driver - however, you are only supposed to run impact drivers in short 3 second bursts. So any heavy drilling through metal or concrete really should be left to the 1/2" chuck drill. Also, the impact driver has a hex collet that snaps over items shaped that way - you can get small drill bits that come with or fit into attachments that will fit the hex collet - but biggish drill bits don't come that way. Right now I am enamored of my Bosch set of drill bits coupled with some Forstner bits for drilling countersunk holes.Read more ›

Hey ,last week I 'pulled the cord', I'm completely tired of these cords and heavy drills, and bought the Milwaukee M18 18V 1/2-Inch drill from tap and die set guide. It is light, small and has all the power I need for furniture work. It is perfect for all sorts of drilling and driving operations. Advice to all. Advise to all.
Ryobi One+ at Home Depot is a collection of homeowner-grade tools.
But you know what? I am a homeowner with an office job who puts less than 1/50th use through my tools that a regular handyman would. My ratio is likely not even measurable when compared to somebody working full time in the trades.
The tools and batteries are relatively inexpensive (wait for Christmas to buy the 4 Amp-Hour batteries when they drop to two for $100).
I have about a dozen of these 18-volt Ryobi tools that I have bought over the last twenty years. I do not usually buy one unless I have at least one, "I sure could've used X for that last thing that I did, and I need to do something similar now."
The only One+ tool I regret buying is the zip saw. The only thing that's good for is drywall, and an HVAC guy taught me that a recip saw with a pruning blade is the best option for cutting holes in drywall.
Hi, I'm a girl. I practically do not understand good tools for the home. I often turn to the services handyman. It helps me a lot. This service often advises its customers on repair, design, various tools and provides other services. For example, furniture assembly https://www.handykith.com/furniture-assembly-nyc. I got the furniture installed very quickly. I recommend this service.
What a useful thread. You shared here tons of helpful information. I want to get some new power tools and a cordless drill is one of them. Actually, I found some articles on toolsturf about nail guns and other tools and I find them very interesting.
