So I go to costco to buy some apples (eating kind) on the cheap and wound up standing in front of 6 different varieties? WTH? Which apples to buy? Since you're at costco you're gonna be sitting on about 5-10lbs of apples. Red Delicious? Granny Smith? Crazy-Super-Fantastics??

I don't like apples. But if you're gonna buy something at Costco, you'd better like it because you'll get a lot of whatever you buy.

Red delicious are fine for kids, but they are a mushy flesh.
Granny smiths are good for baking - not eating (they're tart).
Fujis and galas are good eating. Mcintoshs are good, but on the semi tart side.
Always consider that if you're buying bulk apples, they're going to be many inside which are bruised or getting close to rot stage. I do NOT buy bulk apples unless I plan to cook or bake with them.
You can certainly get crunchy apples, but no, in general red delicious are known for being softer flesh and average to sweet taste. They're favored in schools.
Gala or Mcintosh are the best....red apples have too tough of a skin.

Red Delicious were genetically made (and altered) apples designed for the reason of passing the archaic FDA’s “look and feel test” toward passing quality food standards in apples. Red Delicious were made to have a standard size, shape, and consistent color (lipstick red). The reason schools prefer RD apples is because of no discolred apples in the bunch. Unfortunately, Red Delicious apples lack taste, texture, and protein. FYI; no other country on Earth grows Red Delicious apples. Scientific research analyzing the water and protein content of all apple varieties in this country concluded Gala Apples to be the best tasting and best for you.
The best tasting apple I have had is called a "Grapple." Its apples soaked in grape juice; I know they sell them at Safeway, don't know about the rest of the chains.

Hit the local stands. THAT is where you can find some tasty apples and decide what you like the best. The best apple I ever ate was a Michigan Snow Apple, but you can't get them here. *SOB*

Being vague is almost as fun as that other thing.
Yah, but you'll often pay a bit more for them. The Reston and Vienna farmers markets are pretty good. IIRC, there's one in Oakton at Nottoway Park as well.

Careful what you learn on FFU. Some of it is just plain wrong. If you're hoping for apples, of any type, to be a significant source of protein, you'll be disappointed. Bananas are a much better source of protein. Gala apples will be listed as having 0 or 1g. of protein, depending on where you look.

I should add that apple varieties at farmers markets will be a minimum right now owing to the fact that mid summer is not peak apple season. Come August and September, they'll be bring down apples by the truckload.
The next big wave that we'll see at the farmers markets should be peaches and nectarines, cherries, followed by blackberries.
Mmm. peaches. The BEST is the John Boy peach. Moutoux Orchard grew them locally. Unfortunately, they relocated so I have been without my peaches for a couple of years.

No, actually. One of my best friends is a stripper, and has worked at several different clubs across the country. Almost all strippers hate those songs because they're so overplayed in strip clubs.
When you stop and think of what it must feel like to be naked in front of a bunch of perverts who think it's hot when you do a XXX version of a Warrant video, it makes total sense.
To get back on-topic: Apples are delicious. I've never heard of Super-Crazy-Fantastics, but I want to try one. They sell them at Costco, you say?
Sorry, I forgot about apples... I never know the names of apples, but I think there is a type with Golden in the name, (Maybe Golden Delicous) that is very tasty. Not mushy but not too hard... They were nice and juicy.
I also like the green kind cuz I likes me some sourz's.
Stay away from horse apples and road apples. Adam's apples are good if they're fresh. Crab apples taste like shit. Macintosh Apples are pretty reliable.
Again, though, don't buy the pre-bagged ones, ever.
