'Police Impersonation Robberies' Under Investigation In Virginia
WASHINGTON - Men impersonating police officers have struck twice in Arlington, Virginia, recently. One of the incidents was a violent home invasion. The other was a bogus traffic stop. In both cases victims were robbed but not injured. Investigators believe the two incidents, which happened about 12 hours apart, were unrelated.
On Thursday, Feb. 23rd, two men dressed in civilian clothes came to the door of a home on the 300 block of busy South Fillmore Street at 11:20 at night saying they were police officers with a search warrant.
"When that resident answered the front door," explained Arlington Co. Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck, "they forced their way in, holding her (and her two juvenile children) on the couch at knifepoint. The second subject was armed with a handgun, and searched the house for valuable items."
The robbers made off with nearly $13,000 in cash and jewelry.
About 12 hours after the first incident, on another busy Arlington roadway, there was another occurrence of police impersonation. This time in happened to a motorist on Lee Highway in the Cherrydale neighborhood. A motorist driving a black Mustang convertible waved over an elderly male driver, and told the man he was a police officer (and the motorist was being pulled over for speeding). Upon asking the victim for license and registration, the suspect grabbed $160 in cash from the victim's wallet, and drove away.
Police say they have no reason to believe the impersonation incidents are related. The armed men at the home invasion were black, and the phony policeman motorist was white.
In the S. Fillmore Street robbery one suspect is described as a black man, 6' 2", with a medium build. He was wearing a black ski mask, sunglasses, black gloves, and a black North Face winter coat. The second suspect is a black man, 5' 5" with a heavy build. He was wearing eyeglasses, a black coat, and black pants.
The phony police pullover on Lee Highway happened just before noon on Friday, Feb. 24th. The suspect in that case is described as a white male, about 45 years old, 5' 9", with an average build. It is believed he was driving a black convertible Ford Mustang.
