If that is what FCPS had said, I would be outraged. However it isn't. What FCPS said can be found here:
https://www.fcps.edu/blog/message-parents-tutoring-pods This makes it clear that parents are free to form tutoring pods, FCPS teachers are free to tutor those pods on an independent contractor basis provided the kids are not in the teacher's classes and the teacher isn't doing the work on FCPS time, and that FCPS won't assist parents in setting up such tutoring pods. All OK.
The only thing truly troubling about what FCPS said was its statement "we do have concerns that they may widen the gap in educational access and equity for all students. Many parents cannot afford private instruction. Many working families can’t provide transportation to and from a tutoring pod, even if they could afford to pay for the service." This may all be true. However it isn't FCPS's job to suppress the total quality of education that some students are getting simply because students with access to better resources may end up with a better quality of education than those who don't. To the contrary FCPS's interest should be limited to making sure that every student in FCPS has access to the same SCHOOL PROVIDED resources on the same basis.
It is in fact arrogant and hypocritical of FCPS to be complaining about students getting uneven quality of educations based on parent supplied resources when FCPS has for years endorsed providing uneven quality of education using FCPS resources. If equality of educational opportunity matters to FCPS, it should start by cleaning its own house, rather than complaining about what parents are doing to supplement what FCPS does.
