Well, provoked by the sharp stick of our latest night at the ballpark, the wounded Whiffies can only further fail and founder. What a pathetic show. Meanwhile, it was tough getting out of the GEICO Garage last night, as DCPD was not at all Johnny on the spot in preventing 'block the box' bozos from completely sealing off N Street. There's a reason why these clowns do not have their own TV show. We might have done better in leaving right after tha final 4-3 ground-out, but we tarried for a bit of chatting in reunion with ballpark pals, and particularly over two who were not there even though they had been expected. They've had some health issues in the family of late, but hopefully, they will be able to show up on Saturday.

Meanhwile, it was a cool 57 degrees outside when I first got up, and while the mercury has since climbed all the way to 72, we still have the same cloudless deep blue skies we began with, along with low humidity and gentle puffs of breeze. Made for quite the magnificent walk down and back to bring in the morning paper. Not much in the way of cicada sounds out there now. We may be clear on that account for another 17 years. We do however have a rising tide of baby chipmunks. Should in any case be seeing the mid 70s from now to sunset and then a warmup over the weekend. Should be nice at least until Monday.

Nice is also the tone in piles of praise for Real President Joe in boxing in an iofte sometimes flamboyant Putin and coming away from their meeting with some incremental progress rather than some diplomatic albatross a la El Presidente Ding Dong. This of course comes on the heels of some serious alliance repairing and rebuilding done re EU and NATO relationships. Excellent work all around by RPJ. And the USSC has again seriously slapped down the right-wing in upholding the PPACA that they like to call 'Obamacare'. Sadly, the Court left open doors for bigots to color outside the lines by patently discriminating against LGBTQ Americans. This will change in time, and likely not very much of it. And Friday will be a the first federal Juneteenth holiday, as the 19th falls on Saturday. It's symbolic and all, but symbols have meaning, which is why Confederate monuments need to go.

In other news, Josh Bell did indeed give the home crowd something to cheer abouty by cracking a 2-run 7th-inning homer that provided the margin of victory in a 3-1 final over PIT. Paolo Espino tossed five innings of shutou ball to pick up the win with Brad Hand tiptoeing through some minefields to record the save. Not a very exciting game, but a happy ending at least. The Nats are off today, and will start a 4-game weekend set with the Mets on Friday. Erick Fedde seems set to go against lefty Joey Lucchesi. The Mets are better than the Prtaes, so there could be trouble brewing.

There's nothing but trouble of course brewing in the vats of valueless Falls Chuirch City. Throwing both caution and common sense to reason to the curb, some local low-graders are now claiming that it's party-rime in the Little City, even though there is still a great shortage of things worth celebrating. So the tip last night was 80 on 195. You decide. As a wealthy retiree who's had at least one foor in the restaurant industry since beginning as a dish machine operator in the 1960's, my hope is to be able to leave a 30% tip at the end of a meal. That can be adjusted downward in the case of disappointing performance or, as in this case, upward in the case of superior performance. Certainly most of you will not be able to afford habits such as those, and from what I hear, you are not likely to come across superior performance very often in any case, but do at least put a few bucks in the tip jar at whatever slop shop you might include as 'dining out' where you are. The industry has been hit hard by COVID. A lot of very good places and people were lost over the past year. So as you can, maybe pitch in a few pennies now to help out the surviving folks as they try to get back on their feet.

In any case, it has been aonther beautiful morning thus far out here in the wonderful Sweet Spot. It was a sunny 57 degrees when I first got up, with clear blue skies, low humidity, light breezes, and very little chance of any rain. No wildlife spotted so far today, which comes as something of a relief after the piercing screams and snarling of at least a pair of raccoons interrupted sleep around 4:00 AM. Comes with the territory on occasion, I guess. In contrast to other territories off in the over-hyped southwest, our highs today will reach only the mid 80s, and for the moment at least, we have plenty of water and electricity. All in all, it should be quite a nice day out this way once again. Yay for us.

Yay as well of course for Real President Joe, and (at last) a happy Juneteenth to one and all. Now maybe we could all come to grips as well with the reality of ongoing centuries of systemic (not systematic) racism. There may be room for legitimate debate around the outer edges of so-called Critical Race Theory, but the truth of its central assumptions can hardly be doubted by people of any good faith at all.

In other news, 2019 WS hero Adam Eaton has been sent to the 10-day IL with a strained hammie. Unlike his also injured CWS outfield partners, Eaton should be back in action fairly soon. And we can soon expect what may well be a botched mid-season roll-out of MLB's new anti-substance rules. And of course, while they're taking time to check everybody, they'll still be whining about pace of play. Such a joke. The Nats will host the Mets tonight of course with Fedde and LUcchesi still scheduled on the mound. Hard to expect much from the home side.

In other news, Erick Fedde was terrific, and the bullpen was good enough to take us to the bottom of the ninth in a scoreless tie. Boring! But in tyhe bottom half, Juan Soto drew a 3-2 walk, Zimmie lined a 3-2 single to put runners on the corners with nobody out, and instead of then folding, Yan Gomes ripped a single down the left field line to walk off the Mets, 1-0. The two teams are scheduled for 7-inning games today at 1:05 (Joe Ross vs David Peterson) and 6:05 (Jon Lester vs TBD). We have tickets for the second game, but given the worsening weather outlook, we'll have to see whether we actually go or not.

Little chance of course of there being any reason at all why we would actually go to Falls Church City. When bad backups occur on inbound 66, we do sometimes cut over to Lee Highway, but that hasn't happened since the third lane to Ballston was completed. And with FCC delays in coming to terms with West End financial issues, Fairfax County has put a two-week hold on consideration plans to allow mixed-use development at and around the WFC Metro station site. With so many similar projects already in trouble, the wisdom of proceeding with another isn't quite clear.
