Fairfax County General :
Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
What can I say, just moved to Arizona and I'm already discovering how Phoenix is so much better then Fairfax. Rush hour here is nothing compared to Fairfax, bye bye speed cameras, and hardly any traffic cops on the road.

it’s all sprawled out like a big suburb. like a giant chantilly in the desert. it’s in a beautiful area and i’m sure it’s pretty livable, but it’s not a city worth bragging about.
Just wait until summer. 120+ in the shade. Oh, it's a dry heat they say. True but 120 is miserable wet or dry. Flooding after every afternoon thunderstorm. Oh, and the dust...

If you are about to retire, and don't own a home, moving to Phoenix wouldn't be a bad choice. It's way cheaper housing cost wise.
But if you already own your digs, and like it here, Fairfax is really only at a 10% premium over Phoenix (https://www.bestplaces.net/cost-of-living/phoenix-az/fairfax-va/46672P). And you live in a nicer climate close to some really fun cities.

Within a short train ride, we have:
* Washington, DC (lots of Museums and a surprisingly resurgent beer scene)
* New York City (Beats Los Angeles on attractions and food)
* Baltimore (waterfront + cruise port!)
* Philadelphia (history 101 + cheese steaks)
Add some range and car, and you also have:
* Pittsburgh - Awesome city for a three day weekend
* Atlantic City (cheap Vegas fix with a real beach and free stabbings)
* Annapolis (boating)
* Virginia Beach (our beach city!)
If you need cheaper housing in your non-earning years, I won't shame anyone for going to Phoenix. I just can't imagine trading if your house is already paid off here, unless you need its sales proceeds to live on. One reason why housing is so expensive here is old people really like the area, and never want to leave. It takes a death for a house to go one the market, and shucks, if its in Mantua, expect a kid who inherits it to move in.
Phoenix and Scottsdale has so many cougars tho. It doesn't make sense because Northern Virginia is a lot richer. You would think hot women would be where the money is but that is not the case.
When I lived in Tempe 7 yrs ago, you look at some wetback the wrong way at a stoplight and you could get shot!
They have REAL MUFFFUKIN gangs out there, not like the pussy wannabes out here in va and md.
Next, you’re gunna end up being the white grandparent with the mixed BEANER grandson. JUST wait. The only ones that will be your friends are the other cuck grandparents that thought mixed kids are “ beautiful.”
Good luck!
Been there! Wait until the honeymoon period is over

Except that you could go less than 100 miles from here and have much more affordable housing costs without ending up marooned in some far-away and multi-faceted hell-hole.

What's not to like? If you've planned well enough to afford to live here, you'd be nuts to leave. It's not like rush-hour traffic is a thing after you've retired. Sleep late in the morning and go out to eat early in the evening. Problem solved.

2-BR townhouses near Wegman's in Fairfax are going for $475K, You can get a cozy 3/1 SFH with a nice yard in Winchester for less than $200K.
You pay a premium if you want to live somewhere that has lots of high paying jobs and top tier services. If you work in Downtown DC, Winchester would be a 1.5 to 2 hour commute, each way. Lots of gas and car maintenance comes with that equation.

LA and vegas are about a five hour drive from Phoenix. Not bad but there can be tons of traffic along the way, there’s just not many other places to go in that area. That being said, in the same amount of time Fairfax county people can drive to NYC, Philly, Atlantic City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Richmond, VA Beach, OBX. There’s just more stuff here on the east coast. Phoenix is great though if you like the outdoors & nature stuff. Then again so is this area if you drive an hour.

Hint: Retired persons don't commute to work anywhere. Try to get with the program here.
