School bond overwhelmingly approved!

Anybody who voted against it can fuck off. 315,000,000 dollars is a good start but we will need more.

Thanks Teacher.
You should also be allowed to keep your deduction.

And, I'm betting lots of average teachers do not itemize--and, thus, are unable to claim the deduction, in any case.

Plus, the standard deduction is doubling and will make up for it and the rate will go down.

Use your thinking caps, people.

Give me some real data to support instead of 'betting', then we can think.

It's common sense, most teachers don't deduct unless they're married to someone with a higher income or some other unusual circumstances such as a high-income retired teacher working.

This is a perfect example of lack of wise spending by the school board. Teachers should not have to spend their own money for supplies if the School Board does their job correctly. A perfect example is spending $1,000,000 for changing the name of JEB Stuart High School. Assuming that not all teachers have to spend money on supplies this would give the teachers $500 to spend for supplies rather than an initiative that has no tangible benefit.

Ah, the “smart guy / have answers” rebuttal - the go-to of stupid people who can’t muster a rational retort.

My friend is a teacher in FCPS. She said the biggest problem is all the admin people who have to justify their position. Teachers are micro managed to death by these people.

I can defend myself. First and foremost, this is not a complex solution. In fact, a 10 year old that can control their impulsive urges and do a simple cost/benefit analysis could come up with the same solution as mine. Secondly, the Fairfax County voters do not want sensible solutions to the problems of the FCPS. Elizabeth Schultz has advocated digging deeper into the budget for savings for at least 3 years and Chris Grisafe's campaign was based upon requiring annual program justification and line item analysis of the budget. Both of these were rejected by the voters and the Board. Instead, the School Board's solution has been raising the student/teacher ratio and whining about the failure of the meals tax, a tax increase that has never passed in Virginia when required by a referendum.

Look, you get what you vote for; all the pussy-hat-wearing, post-menopausal Resistance members want NoVa to be a sanctuary akin to Montgomery County, and so what happened to MoCo’s once good schools is now happening to NoVa’s soon-to-be once good schools. Funny how a system collapses when you invite a bunch of low-IQ, poor third-worlders to use it. So what if you aren’t getting the service you’re paying (more and more and more) for? At least you can sleep tight at night in the comfort of knowing you’re not a racist! Those kids of yours are just going to have to get use going to school with 20-year-old ninth graders who can’t speak English and MS-13 gangsters - they will be enriched through diversity and have great stories to tell on their college apps!

FCPS teachers are discouraged from spending their own money on classroom supplies.

The bond vote will pay for increased space to warehouse the illegals.

IQO is right on here. That million bucks could have been spent on a teacher for ten years at 100K per or two for five years and so on. The school board is loaded with low level politicians who make too much and do to little.

The bond money goes to building clean up to date work spaces for teachers and modern spaces for your children to learn in. The school board doesn't control the money but votes on the contracts. In the past 20 years 200 of the 257 school buildings have been renovated and brought up to current standards so the kids of the county have decent schools to go to.

Serious question - why can't you progressives formulate cogent, rational rebuttals? I don't think I've ever been met by anything but juvenile, ad hominem name calling by a typical progressive, ever.

"o the kids of the county" - you misspelled, "Mexico."

Your claim is bullshit. The average teacher spends nothing on school supplies.

My kid's teacher even wants us to send in boxes of tissues to go with all the colored pencils, markers, and paper she demands.

They're typical government workers - what private sector job pays for your "supplies?" And who knew construction paper was so expensive LOL

People who become teachers are unqualified to do anything else. They get degrees in nonsense, made-up disciplines, "graduate," then find no one wants to hire a Frankfurt School Critical Theory major, so they turn to the government for a make-work job.

The public school system is just a money laundering scam for the Democrat Party. Democrats campaign on "school funding," pass ever-ballooning school budgets and over-inflated teacher pay (six figures a year for half-a-year's worth of work - nice gig), then the Teacher's Union collects the money (via extortion - er - "dues"), cleans it, and gives it right back to Democrat candidates. Along the way impressionable minds are indoctrinated into becoming Democrat voters.

That's why we need a voucher-based system - government has NO business making parents' educational choices.

You are fucking kidding? Most private sector employers either provide their professionals with supplies or reimburse them for supplies purchased. We keep a room full of them, and if we don't have it we will order it. We trust and expect our professional employees to behave like professionals, and we treat them like they are professionals. If your private sector employer isn't doing that, he must not value your services.

You are a serious fuckin’ idiot.

1. You clearly don’t know how money laundering works. Please, provide some evidence that Democrats use public schools for it.

2. EVERY discipline was ‘made-up’. They don’t grow on trees and get dragged over to a college. EVERY graduate is ‘unqualified to do something else’. Do you think an engineer can just jump over and be a veterinarian? “Sports physiology is cool because you can switch to accountant in a blink” - said no one ever.

3. Average salary for a Fairfax County teacher is 60,000. (That’s five figures)
http://www.indeed.com/salaries/Teacher-Salaries,-Fairfax%2C+VA
The majority of teachers start the second week of August and work until June 20.
That’s 6 weeks of summer. Hardly working ‘half-a-year’.

4. Teachers don’t have to join a union so there is no ‘extortion’.
You have a very overinflated perception of teachers unions influence.
FEA averages to about $1000 a month to all candidates (not each).

5. Vouchers WILL make a business out of your child’s education. Just like Higher Education but with even less regulation.

I no responsible for feed my children, FCPS must pay. We free housing and education after arriving from Pakistan but we demand more from American. Why I need to feed my children when America pay for? Why I pay rent when America pay for?

1. Just follow the money - which candidates does the Teacher's Union support? Which party do they work for?

2. LOL - so the hard sciences were "made up?" Mathematic principles are subjective? Physics is subjective? Medical discoveries were "made up?" Spoken like a true "social sciences" major. And yes, an engineering grad can EASILY transition into a variety of different professions, and they frequently do (finance, CS, or any other quant-based pursuit). Frankfurt School of Critical Theory Transectional Social Comparatives majors? They're nearly unemployable, which is why so many of them end up taking a job as a public school teacher.

3. Since you clearly possess a BA in some nonsensical study, and probably haven't taken a math corse since 10th grade, I'm not surprised that you don't understand simple statistics, or how a mathematic average wouldn't tell the real story about teacher salaries. Even if it were the case that the mode (which is the real metric that matters) were $60k, that's $60k for working six months a year (plus those gold-plated benefits).

4. Sure, sure - no pressure at all (unless you want to actually progress through the ranks, then it's absolutely necessary).

5. Typical scare tactics from a Teacher's Union flack, as if the outcomes of the public school system are laudable or even comparable to a private education. I'd rather market factors influence my child's education than a half-baked marxist public teacher over whom I have no recourse - at least then my kid's education would be under MY control, not yours.

Not supportive of the county's liberal agenda especially evil LGBT and rampart illegal immigration in schools, and far from being the only one. Every reasonable opportunity get, buy online or from catalog from sellers not having a presence in Virginia and not pay the 6% tax, especially if free shipping and prices lower or similar to local stores. This includes many Amazon 3rd party sellers with order not fulfilled by Amazon, some eBay sellers, Publishers Clearing House, the list goes on. Also besides if the sellers do not collect sales tax at the point of sale, who has the hours to go through a years worth of receipts (even if saved) to calculate what is owed for the Virginia Consumer Use Tax. Many people are not even aware of this tax which is hard to enforce, and doubtfully much will change until Internet tax laws change. One of the county supervisors mentioned the issue in their newsletter, but offered no real solution other than crying, crying, buy local.

I just love how you contard parents are constantly ragging on the school systems approach to teaching your fuck mistakes. You taint your little cum stains minds with your political beliefs that the schools are poisoning their minds with a liberal agenda and feel somehow that a teacher is not doing her or his job because they are not pandering to your "constrictive principles". Then send them to school where they have zero respect for the teachers authority, they disrupt the class, do not do their work and act out all through the day. They are taking away the learning time from the other students and undermining the teachers authority and when they get home you assholes high five them and start preaching your MAGA bullshit through the foam of your next beer instead of working with the schools to help your kids get the best out of the system.

Hers an idea, if you don't like the way the system is teaching your kids and you don't want your kids to associate with all the immigrants then move to a district that doesn't have them. North/South Dakota, Nebraska and like places come to mind. But those districts wouldn't stand for your insubordinate little bastards would they?

Hey Public School Brain Washers serious question here. Why don't you take your kids out of public schools and send them to a private school where your needs are better served? Cost to much? You want the federal government to subsidize it?

Here is a thought! Permit charter schools in Fairfax County and from your perspective both sides will be satisfied. The schools are run with regular funds, kids with traditional values are not forced to be exposed to the FCPS social labs, your "claim" of disruptive kids is solved and the School Board will be freed up to run the core schools in any fucking way that they want. Problem--the School Board and Teacher's Union will not allow it because of their fear of the stampede of kids running for the doors trying to escape YOUR paradise.

Look at DC as an example. The parents line up days in advance to get their kids in charter schools and out of the regular public schools. Even the DC nigs understand the difference.

The main point to be made is that there are solutions to the FCPS problems if the School Board would be willing to try new things rather than raising student/teacher ratios and whining about more and more taxpayer's funds year after year. The problem is that the School Board is scared to death that they will be proven wrong and lose control over their fiefdom.

Someone on here really needs help. You have my pity.

Public schools are a public good like public roads.

Also, the value of your house is tied to the quality of the public schools. If the quality of Fairfax's goes down so does the value of your house. Most likely, repubs are posting from a nursing home, parents basement, or Moscow (have a vodka, Boris).

Do Charter schools accept everyone and do they keep the hard to teach? - No.
That is why charter schools are a failure.
Every school in Fairfax has a little charter school inside it. This charter school calls itself GT, honors, and AP.

Currently, outlay for interest on debt exceeds 150 million a year, debt and principal, over 500 million.

Well said Inquisitive One. However the FCPS utopia is not MY sanctuary. My observations are based on the fact that my wife is a school teacher, 6th grade, in the system and many of the parents are EXACTLY as I have stated. Charter schools and vouchers? Sure why not give it a try. The problem I see ahead of that would be the subsidies would make a priority of "under privileged" minorities and foreign students to fend off criticism of favoring white students. The best behaved kids in FCPS are the foreign kids especially the poorer ones. FCPS facilities for most of them are far superior to anything called a school in the countries they come from. Thanks Bond Referendum. They behave, study hard and are thankful for the opportunity.

I agree with your views on the School Board though. They certainly don't make it any easier for the teachers to discipline the students to the point where discipline is almost nonexistent. In both the schools and at home.

My beef is with the parents that feel they and their kids entitled. The kids are a reflection of their parents. To them I say take your kids out and move on or, and God forbid, teach them the value of hard work, community and love of country. Once that is established then they can bitch. Until then they can STFU.

BTW the appointment of the new superintendent, will foster more inclusion and tolerance of minorities going forward. To the parents that cannot bring themselves to at minimum be OK with that you should really consider alternative forms of getting your kids educated. Perhaps home schooling or private schools. Or you could just bitch about the way it is...

I voted against it. We have no children in the schools. I would rather my tax dollars to go to the parks.

No it isn't. The School Bond was going to be on the ballot regardless of whether the Meals Tax was approved or not. The Meals Tax was going to operations. The bonds go to capital improvements.

Arguments like this are one reason why charter schools in Virginia are relatively rare.

To be blunt the thinking is "The taxpayers are providing you with an opportunity for a free public education. If you don't like what is offered you are free to send your kids elsewhere at your own expense". It is those last four words that charter school advocates and school voucher advocates cannot stand. They don't just want the freedom to be able to send their kids to the school they for whatever reason they want. They also want to stick taxpayers with the bill. This isn't something that will sit well with many.

If you want to sell charter schools in an area such as this, arguing that it will increase the chances of John and Mary getting into UVa, will keep John and Mary away from the riff raff or that it will shield John and Mary from liberal social engineering won't work. You have a better chance of selling charter schools by arguing it will improve Juan and Maria's educational performance, and that it will free up the teachers at Juan and Maria's base school to spend more time teaching the other kids...and btw it will save money too.

Throw in a few non-educational perks and you could have something that parents of qualified kids would be fighting to get their kids in to. Then if speical needs charter schools worked school officials might be open to allowing charter schools generally.

If you are trying to convince anyone of the validity of your argument, it is a major failure.

I am under the impression that FCPS is an inclusive school system. At least that is the unofficial motto of the School Board Et Al says at every opportunity. What would more inclusion and tolerance (more disruptive students???) look like?

1. That's not how money laundering works, stupid. That's buying influence.
Using your dumb-ass logic, Republicans are 'money laundering' 1000x more money through the NRA.
Again, FEA has only given $12,000 over an entire year to political campaigns. That's nothing.

2. Yes, made up. The human mind created and codified the scientific method over years of study. Just as they made up music, literature, religion. There is a whole field of physics that is just made up; Theoretical Physics. String Theory, Big Bang Theory, Quantum field theory.

3. Clearly you have a degree in BS. Reading comprehension, stupid. I provided you the facts. The average Fairfax County teacher works 10 1/2 months a year, NOT 6 months. Not only that, your logic is stupid. Nobody inflates their salary for work they could be doing. Get that weak shit outta here.

4. Where's the evidence? Again, provide some factual evidence.

5. LOL! Sure, create a straw man with the 'half-baked marxist public teachers'. Because you have NO FACTS.

At some point the friction will become so great that the separation of conflicted parties, disruptive classrooms, dissatisfied and frustrated teachers and class warfare will make Charter Schools a reasonable alternative. Historically, Charter Schools have provided for specialty learning experiences and special needs in their establishing charter.

Please!!! ANY poorly managed school system will have problems. Just look at the very long and sad history of the DC Public Schools.

And DC is tiny compared to the entire states of Florida, Utah, and Ohio.

So let's just start creating more schools with LESS oversight and let private companies get rich. Brilliant!

Thank you Brother for the citation! The posters here need it spelled out for them .. soooo.
Amen.
and I am VERY glad my kids are home schooled!
Sure it is a sacrifice financially, but they are worth my every effort.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous[a] will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

In Virginia, Charter Schools are created under the umbrella authority of the existing School Board. The difference is that the day to day management of the schools are outside of the authority of the Board and subject to a management council.

So is Florida
http://www.fldoe.org/schools/school-choice/charter-schools/charter-school-faqs.stml

Ohio is also the same and multiple boards ...

And I repeat poor management exists in public schools too. Plus nobody is getting rich. It would solve far more problems than what would be created IF the FCPS School Board does their job. Quite frankly, in the whole process the greatest amount of risk lies with the authority that the current School Board has in the process.

No, that is why they are a success. Removing distractions eliminates the greatest barrier to education.

The government has an obligation to educate even those who can't learn, but not at the expense of those who have potential to be astronauts if not stuck in a classroom with extreme distractions.

1. Does the NRA's employees' paychecks get paid by the government like public school teachers do? Does the Republican Party vote for pay increases for the NRA, then expect the NRA to return a portion of those pay increases to it through an NRA union?

2. I don't know how to respond to this, except to say that I hope to God you're not actually a teacher...

3. Why won't you provide the mode income of NoVA public teachers? Do you even know what "mode" means? "10.5" months? So summer break is 45 days? And all the other school holidays?

4. Every principle in the system is a Union member - coincidence?

5. "Straw. man" - do you know what that is? Because I didn't make one.

As for your Union-provided charter school talking points, what does that have to do with what I've written? I don't support charter schools, I support VOUCHERS - are they the same thing?

If you live in Fairfax, a litter charter exists in every school. The kids in GT, honors, or AP classes are not distracted. Not my fault if some kids do not take full advantage of it.

Adding charters to Fairfax is stupid and redundant.

Proud to have vote NO to Fairfax bond issues 14 times. All of them have passed overwhelmingly. People freak out for no reason. Fairfax County is largely conformist bureaucrats with government sinecure.

1. This scenario isn't even possible, stupid. Union's don't give money to Democratic campaigns to get 'pay increases'. Why? It's a School Board function to manage compensation, not the state government.

2. So you are saying the String Theory wasn't formed in a human mind and communicated? Or in simpler terms created ... made up? Was it aliens?

3. I don't need your 'mode' bullshit. I've got the facts: The typical teacher is on a 260 day contract. 260 days is more than 6 months. https://www.fcps.edu/careers/salary-and-benefits/salary-scales
Specialists/Cafeteria/Health staff are typically on shorter 198 day contracts.

4. Strawman Fallacy - Substituting a person’s actual position or argument with a distorted, exaggerated, or misrepresented version of the position of the argument.
https://www.logicallyfallacious.com/tools/lp/Bo/LogicalFallacies/169/Strawman-Fallacy
Like I said, straw man; "half-baked marxist public teacher"

5. So you only want vouchers for public or private schools? Good luck with that.

So recap...
- Won't give credible evidence of Democratic 'money laundering'.
- Won't answer questions to how Theoretic Physics have come into our conscious.
- Won't accept teachers work longer than 6 months when provided evidence from the Fairfax County Public School website.
- Won't provide any evidence of the teacher's union oppressing teachers.

Are you going to continue to dodge the questions?

Wow you’re stupid. Not a prejoritive, just a statement of fact. It’s impossible to debate someone as intellectually limited as you (believes mathematics and things like gravity are “made up,” doesn’t know what a mathematical mode is, doesn’t understand what a straw man fallacy is, thinks vouchers could apply to charter schools, etc, etc, etc. But it’s good to let this thread stand in public so that others might see the sorts of people who work and advocate for the public school system.

It is utterly terrifying that you might have anything to do with educating children.

LOL - the future of Northern Virginia public schools. Don't worry, though - the school system will simply ask for more money, and you'll keep voting to give it to them. Enjoy your diversity - you wanted it, and you're getting it.

All I have ever heard from teachers since kindergarten is that they need more money. It never stops. Just give us more money. We have spent over a trillion dollars on schools, yet aptitude scores keep declining.

My apologies. I did not verify it, however, I did know that a VOTER REFERENDUM approving a meals tax rarely passed.

You need to keep in mind that without education we have nothing. There is no cost to education. Education is an investment that must be made in our future.

If you think education is expensive try not having education for awhile, you will discover a whole new meaning of expensive.

School Boards were not around in the 19th century when Mark Twain was living. Fake quote.

Anyone who voted against the bond has no soul.

That point is probably far off in the future. When it is reached there is no certainty that charter schools will be the adopted solution. Most Fairfax County voters want high quality schools for all students qualified to attend. The perception is that those backing charter schools want to get an elite education for their kids at taxpayer expense without their kids having to mix with the general population of Fairfax County students. Until the perception changes charter schools or school vouchers for average or elite students won't fly.

A number of them have passed in Virginia over the years. When the County started the latest meals tax proposal they had great confidence that it would pass. They anticipate opposition from the restaurant industry and from anti-tax advocates. They did not anticipate that there was widespread opposition by other groups.

I agree that it is not worthwhile debating a point that will have no chance in the current environment. However, I would like to make a couple of points in closing why I believe that Charter Schools would enhance local education. First, by removing the students with traditional values you would be removing many of the issues that have distracted the School Board and prevented them from focusing on quality education for all of the kids. Secondly, by separating the kids with various interests, problems, needs, etc. you are providing specialized education that would result in greater efficiency, achievement and increasing standardized test scores. With all of that said, I realize that some of what was just stated defies current trends with this School Board, some aspects would be falsely tagged as discriminatory and still other segments could be challenged in court as discriminatory. For that reason and the other aspects of how the FCPS is being managed the best that can be expected of this system in the future is an adequate education for an ever increasing cost to the taxpayer.

Here's some stunning data on the incidence of street-based sexual harassment around the world. As most women clearly know, it happens *all* the time.

While there are a number of reasons women don't report harassment, the good news is that sites like Ihollaback.org are using social media as a way not only to make it easier for women to report incidences but also to combat this problem.
