A 57-year-old security team leader at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville was charged with sex abuse Thursday after he had “inappropriate contact” with a 17-year-old student at the school, police said.
According to Montgomery County Police, Mark Christopher Yantsos of Rockville had the contact with the teenage girl while he worked as a security team leader at Richard Montgomery High School.
On Thursday, police arrested Yantsos at his home and charged him with sexual abuse of a minor and a fourth-degree sex offense. He was taken to the county’s central processing unit. His bond information was not immediately available.
The police said the school system placed Yantsos on administrative leave as soon as it learned of these allegations.
The arrest came after authorities were notified by school officials that an employee had “engaged in an ongoing sexual relationship with a student at the high school where he worked,” according to a police statement.
The teenager told detectives that Yantsos befriended her in 2016 and had bought her several gifts since that time. In March, he bought her a phone so they could communicate during after school, officials said. They said they have copies of “inappropriate text messages” that Yantsos sent the girl.
On March 3, the victim said, Yantsos picked her up at her home and drove her to a Rockville hotel, where “he engaged in inappropriate contact with her,” officials said.
