OK someone gave a go at the top Fairfax County HS QBs of the 1990s:

Lavon Carter, McLean
Tony Childress, Centreville
Brian Day, Fairfax
Mark DiCicco, Madison
P.J. Dolan, Centreville
Carlton Phelps, West Potomac
B.J. Quiqley, Lake Braddock
Denny Randolph, Edison
Brad Regier, McLean
Mat Shannon, West Springfield
Buddy Teschner, Oakton
Chris Willetts, West Potomac
D'Arcy Wills, Lake Braddock

Anyone remember earlier era QBs?

The Concord football program capped an historic rise to the top of the WVIAC on Saturday afternoon, defeating 19th-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan 48-40 at Callaghan Stadium to claim its first conference championship since 1990.

Running back Brian Kennedy enjoyed a strong effort from CU's offensive line – including center Brandon Link – to rush for a career-high 303 yards on 35 carries.

One of the problems with NOVA football is there is not the devotion to HS football like there are in other parts of the country. Off season programs around here seem to consist of 3 days a week in the weight room doing basic lifts for an hour. It's better than nothing, but in other parts of the country kids are going 5-6 days a week. A lot of places they work out both before and after school. When you compare some of the HS players here with kids down South, it looks like you're comparing a college team to middle school team.

When we moved to the area three years ago I was told Westfield had the best, and really the only decent, off season program in the area. Dedication to that kind of a program usually comes with a coach who has a real desire to win, and understanding of what it takes. I think the area is lacking that dedication from coaches. With all of the kids, really talented kids, in this area, and the resources available to them, there is no good reason football shouldn't be better.

The link below is from the twitter page of the school my cousins kids go to. Look at the weight room work, along with the morning workouts, and tell me if anyone has seen anything like that around here. And this is from a school in Arkansas that has been just a little above average in football. Think what an off season program like this would do to schools in the area.

OK, breaking it down just a little. It is true that HS football in NOVA is not worshiped as much as in many areas. I know it is hard for the football haters frequently seen on this board to understand but it is low key around here compared to many parts of the country.

I disagree with your comments about though about the difference between the athletic preparation between high schools here and other areas. During the season, virtually all NOVA high schools DO have two-a-day training sessions.

The quality of football is very good in NOVA. It is certainly a lot better than it was 15 years ago. The best teams in NOVA can hold their own against the best non-private schools in the country. I have watched a lot of high school football in many states (PA to CA) and NOVA has nothing to be ashamed of. Oh, and Westfield isn't doing anything off season differently than most other schools. If anyone is telling you that you are wrong.

IF the Children of the Elitist Northern Region of Virginia didn't participate in Multiple Sports, Fall Winter Spring, they might be inclined to participate in a single Sport Specific Program. As for the True Elite Athletes, they are training on their own outside of the School/Program Work-outs, not to worry NLR can come to town any time they would like and take their lumps!

True, so many personal trainers & gyms filled with hs kids, True AP,SSI,Perfect Performance, also every gym trainer that has the kids of their clients. Instead of chasing a dream parents should be spending this kind of money and time on making their kids smart and prepared for the real world, instead our STEM scores fall and we fall further and further behind other nations in math & science so much so that we have to import 100K pple every year to fill IT positions but that's another story for another conversation.

Did you consider that maybe not everyone wants to be in IT? Anyway, those imports are not because we don't have the personnel - it's because the companies want to save money. I know many a skilled programmer that lost their job because their employer wanted to save money with imports or outsourcing.

As far as elite an being a multiple sport athlete you might want to check your data in relation to football Last year I saw an article on Urban Meyer and his thoughts. Out of the 50 plus kids he had recruited to Ohio State all but 2 were multi sport athletes. College coaches want multi sport athletes. You can spend months is some elite training facility with some 100 hour coach throwing you balls to track. Doesn't even come close to playing centerfield an tracking a seed going 100mph off a bat.

1.Centreville
2.South County
3.South Lakes
4.Westfield
5.Madison or Robinson

Take it to the Bank South Lakes Will not be a contender they won't be in the Top 20 much less top 4. South County certainly will be in the Top 10 until play-off time when they will be a no-show as Well. Hayfield and West Potomac easily take their place.

1.Centreville -after 2 down years by their standards, they have a lot of really good talent coming up esp in the class of 2019,20, watch them to throw more than they have in the past, plus they always have a surprise transfer.
2.South County - numbers & size. Big team physically and they have a top3 WR in the state, will coaching and lack of discipline hold them back or will they finally break through?
3.South Lakes- they have really good backfield and program has been improving past couple of years and they also have numbers with recent success draw more kids to play
4.Westfield- defending champs enough said. Best coaching staff. Lost a lot but they will contend cuz that's what they always do
5.Madison or Robinson- both really good solid programs, if Rams had a decent QB that could complete a pass when they do pass they would've been a lot better, their play action game is solid just the QB last season was missing wide open kids. Madison plays well on both sides of the ball and they run and pass effectively, nothing to wow you but they are good at a lot of things which will win you ball games.

Hayfields QB situation is not as good as last years, Cobbs numbers will take a dip.
WPO- honestly have no idea about them. How many returning players they have and who did they lose from last season?

Why South County? They were absolutely loaded with talent last year. Went 7-3 and were an easy out in round 2. They lost a lot of seniors. What makes you think they will be better this year?

They are a big physical team and if they can control their emotions (coaches do a better job) they have one of the best wide outs in the state and they have a monster at RB, kid is over 6' 220lbs and fast. He will be an absolute battering ram this year.

Is Lake Braddock the biggest joke in the state or what?

The Principal fires the former AD for issues he and the AD knew were going on in the Girls BB program and did nothing until a parent went to the school board.

Then fires the Head Football Coach, because he knew the Principal had lied about the girls BB program, then hires him back because the FFx County makes him. Then decides to let him go again.
Now the FFx County is investigating him for lying to the investigation panel.

Parents are livid that no one has given them any direction or communication on the status for the football program. Where is the leadership in the administration at Lake Braddock? Are all schools run this poorly?

Maybe with all this uncertainty going on they will allow the players to transfer to a school of their choice.

So who is the best WR in the NOVA class of 2018?

We have Dillon Spalding (South County) who has been offered by:
Tennessee
Virginia Tech
N.C. State
Rutgers
Syracuse
Temple
Vanderbilt
Virginia
West Virginia

And Brian Cobbs (Hayfield):
N.C. State
Old Dominion
Temple
Virginia
Wake Forest
West Virginia
Yale

These gotta be the top 2 – anyone else in the mix we should know about?

Ive seen the Hayfield transfer, he struggled with location and zip on the ball while at camp, Cobb's better be ready to get a lot of YAC cuz this kid is not nearly as good as QB from last season.

Who's SOCO transfer? Where'd he play last season?

True, that replacing Shonn Mitchell will be tough. But, the last time Smith won the State Championship in 2008, was with J.J. Williamson whom replaced Phillip Sims. Matching the smarts of Mitchell will be tough but the incoming backup already has 7-8 D-1 offers & most of those are from Big 5 Conference Teams! He's certainly more athletic as a dual threat QB. You can definitely expect a more balanced offense in 2017.. It's possible Smith will have a better defense in 2017 as well. Their kicking really fell off last year, it has to improve to keep the pressure off the other aspects of their attack.

Sounds like 6A North is wide open in 2017. 6A South road goes through Smith with Colonial Forge likely being their biggest challenge at the Regional Final again.

They say 6A north is wide open every single year but it's always either Westfield or Centreville.

Always thought most posters on here were clueless and you guys continue to prove me right. There will no longer be a 6A north next year. The Notth is divided up into 2 regions and adds in the rest of the PW schools.

Favorites are:
CVille, SL, Battlefield, WF in one region
Hylton, Soco, WPot... who knows in the other

Centreville Wildcat starting WR/Wingback/RB fractured his ankle at 7on7 tournament last weekend, are those tournaments worth the risk? I'm sure Haddock is not a fan and not happy about this.

Too bad but had nothing to do with the 7x7 play. Could just as easily happened sliding into second base if he was playing spring baseball. Can't live in a bubble.

Westfield Football. 2017. The demographics of the school have been slowly changing. They are losing a very solid batch of seniors (Delaney, Petrillo, Jewell, Free, Johnson, Eckert, Frimpong, Tsetou, Quitugua e.g.).

The last time Westfield was in this situation was in 2012 when they lost 40 seniors off their 12-1 team that lost the Northern Region Championship game to Centreville 27-24. They came right back and went 12-1 again. I think this upcoming season will be Coach Simmons greatest challenge since he took over the head coaching job in 2011.

The senior class doesn’t have many stars. Solid players sure. But there are very few positions where the potential replacements are on par with what is leaving the building. Losing their defensive coordinator two seasons in a row. I think they will be a good team but I doubt they will be on such a significant level above the rest (won the last two region titles by combined score of 82-20). It will be an interesting season for sure.

Was just taking a look to compare the great run Coach Verbanic had there with the nice run of seasons Coach Simmons has had.

Between 2002-2007 Westfield compiled a 69-6 record over those six seasons under Coach Verbanic, with 5 Concorde District Championships, 2 Northern Region Championships and 2 State Championships.

Between 2011-2016 Westfield went 74-10 in the first six seasons with Coach Simmons, with 5 Concorde District/Conference 5 Championships, 2 6A North Region Championships and 2 State Championships.

Verbanic’s 2008 team (after their second state title) did go 9-3, won the Concorde in 2009 at only 6-4 and then went 6-4 again (bounced out first round playoffs last two years). It’s really hard to keep up the intensity especially when there are so many other hungry teams around. Looking for revenge.

Don't be so melancholy Westfield Historian. There are going to be Some stellar Athletes moving into those $500-$600k townhomes across from the Police Station. Westfield also has a Transfer From TJ, some Asian Kid, Kim I think, At QB he's gonna win it all.

Hey Trumptard, racist much?(he's Asian so he has to come from TJ) He's not a transfer from TJ, he played jv and varsity his freshman year. With Morin & Gavyn and Bissett at WR they will be fine and Asante at RB they will be improved from last year also Cockrill will be a beast this year! Only have to worry how the O & D lines will be. Where it will hurt most is special teams. No more mullet head the way he could flip the field with his punts will hurt also kick offs, about 85% of his kicks were in the end zone, also he booted a couple of 49yd field goals last season.

Don't be a a dick, he's a kid, show some class, oh wait your a VYI coach, you have none. That kid is better than what you have at Madison or Oakton. Oakton your QB is 5'6" with a weak arm and couldn't pass down field, who knows what Madison had at back up but if he sat behind your varsity kid this past season good luck cuz he couldn't pass to anyone other than The kid who got hurt in playoff game vs Westfield.

I bet this is the same jerk VYi coach who I saw 2 seasons ago (my 90 team was waiting to play next) making a fool of himself yelling "Boom" at everyone every time they scored, only thing was the kids were small probably ankle biter maybe 80lbs. Real classy fella and his other coach was smoking up a storm in the parking lot with his giant mug that he would conatstantly fill up (didn't know Bud made coffee in a can) in the parking lot

The Southeast – states like Florida, Georgia and Louisiana – have long been considered the nation’s high school football hotbeds. But the District and Maryland are right up there, too, and Virginia isn’t far behind. The three send 7.2 percent, 6.5 percent and 5.6 percent, respectively, of their high school football players to the Division 1 ranks.

Depends on who the new HC is, under Henderson's predecessor, Roy Hill, they made the playoff's every year. reaching the regional final once. Henderson did no better or worse than Coach Hill.

Until Westfield is knocked off, I still think they're the favorites. Maybe Centreville, both teams play highly disciplined football and take advantage of their opponents mistakes. Unless another area team has a significant talent advantage, I suspect the Northern Region will play out the same way it has for the last 5 years.

I can't believe Henderson will leave the QB transfer high & dry like that. Maybe he'll stay at Chancellor leaving Hatfield with no one to throw to Cobbs.

So, who has the talent to overcome the disceplined style of Westfield?

Colonial Forge is about the only team that will challenge O. Smith in 6A South.

I wouldn't call WHS "disciplined" they committed their fair share of stupid penalties last season (off sides and holding which are totally within their control not to happen)but that being said I say Cville will be better at their skill positions, South County, Madison & South Lakes (both of those teams are similar, lost some talent in key places but the rising Sr.s should pick up the slack) and the dark horse, Lake Braddock, can new coach quickly right this ship or will Robinson take advantage and leap frog them.
