SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WJLA) - Kayakers paddled upon the body of an adult woman floating in Huntsman Lake Sunday, authorities said.
Around 10:30 a.m., first responders were called to the inland lake near Huntsman Boulevard and Fairfax County Parkway in Springfield.
"It's crazy," said Trent Brown, who learned the news on Twitter. "I've lived here for 18 years. It's not a rowdy neighborhood so to actually hear about a dead body being here is like, wow!"
At approximately 1 p.m., first responders boarded an inflatable boat and closely examined the woman's body. She was floating face down about 15 feet from the shoreline. It appeared she was wearing blue jeans and a grey tank top. The main question: was this purely accidental or something sinister?
"The person was clearly dead and had been here for some time," Fairfax County Police Department spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said. "Are there any missing adults? Has anybody called-in today or recently, regarding somebody that might be missing...? That's where [our detectives] begin and then they'll go from there."
Huntsman Lake has been the longtime recreational jewel of the neighborhood. People fish, kayak and canoe on the water. Many others walk the paved hiking paths that weave along the shoreline.
"I'm certainly hoping it was an accident where somebody fell down into the water as opposed to murder, you know? I think that would really concern me," said Reena Roy Mirchandani, a new resident who has a husband and two young daughters.
Rescuers pulled the unidentified woman's body to shore around 3 p.m. Sunday. It was taken to the medical examiner's office where an autopsy will determine the cause of death. Detectives would not say if there were any obvious signs of trauma.
