When it comes to gov't regulation its all about incrementalism.
This current push for net neutrality is about the FCC just getting their foot in the door. And then slowly over the course of several years they'll ratchet up the regulations until the gov't has almost complete control.
Example 1: The FDA was originally founded with the simple mission of making sure that food and drug manufacturers were honestly labeling their products. If the package said "beef" then it better actually contain beef. Today they micromanage virtually every aspect of the food and drug industry.
Example 2: The 16th ammendment (income tax) was ratified in 1913. The first permanent income tax rate in the US was only 1% on incomes over $3000/year (about $75K adjusted for inflation). And look at what that turned into?
Like everything else the gov't regulates, net neutrality will start out small and innocent enough and then grow into an unwieldy bureaucratic monster. So its best not to even create the framework for gov't regulation of the internet in the first place. In the long run they will abuse it just like they always do.
