Police on Saturday afternoon said they have arrested the suspect in a sexual assault reported in the Gainesville area Wednesday night.
A 19-year-old woman was walking in the area of U.S. 29 and the Gainesville Square Shopping Center between 9:45 p.m. and 10 p.m. when a man sexually assaulted her, Prince William police said in a news release.
The man approached the woman from behind and pushed her down an embankment, where he sexually assaulted her, police said.
The woman fought with the man for several minutes and was eventually able to get away, police said.
The victim was screaming when she climbed out of the embankment and someone stopped to help her, police said.
Police searched the area, but did not find the attacker.
Police identified the suspect as 23-year-old Juan Carlos Lopez Ramirez, also known as Noah and issued warrants charging him with abduction with intent to defile and aggravated sexual battery.
As of 3 p.m. Saturday, Ramirez was in custody, police said. They did not release any other details.
