Two Limerick communities are in mourning after two "sports mad" cousins died tragically within weeks of each other.
The body of bartender Damien ‘Damo’ Scanlon, who died in a tragic, freak accident in Washington last week, will be returned to his home town of Knockaderry today for burial tomorrow.
Mr Scanlon, 30, fractured his skull after slipping on ice in freezing conditions in the early hours of Jan 17. He had just finished his shift at O’Sullivan’s Irish Bar in Herndon, Fairfax County, Virginia, in the Washington DC metropolitan area. It is the second tragedy to hit the family in less than a month.
Mr Scanlon’s first cousin Tom Griffin, aged 37, from Ballyculhane, Kildimo, Co Limerick, passed away in hospital on Christmas Day surrounded by his family.
Mr Griffin, who is survived by his wife Mags and young children Ben and Liadh, had battled cancer after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour last September.
A source close to the family said: "It’s a massive tragedy for both families."
Mr Scanlon is the only child of Jimmy and Patricia, and is also survived by his 93-year old grandmother, Aggie Mescall. He had been living in Herndon for the past two years.
His body will lie in repose at the family home in Knockaderry today. His funeral Mass will take place at St Munchin’s Church, Knockaderry, tomorrow at 11.30am, followed by burial in the New Cemetery, Clouncagh.
