How come when I watch a movie from Netflix on my tv the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen do not show up like when I am watching a dvd on my tv?

I automatically gain the full dimensions of my tv screen by watching a movie from Netflix.

The dvds I watch subtract half of my screen with the black bars.

It is because the function mode is set to black bar mode. You need to change your televisions crop mode.

It's because you're not seeing the entire shot.

anamorphic widescreen

The long version of the story is that there is more than one aspect ratio and there are basically three ways to deal with it: clip, insert black bars, or scale.

You need to degauss your screen regularly or black bars will appear.

Most movies these days are shot in 1.85:1 aspect ratio, which is close enough to the 16:9 aspect ratio of most modern televisions that they either crop the frame slightly so it fills your TV screen, or you don't notice the thin black bars for uncropped movies.

Movies shot in 1:2.35 aspect ratio on NetFlix do have the black bars across the top and bottom of the screen.
