Walk into any Asian grocery store in the Fairfax area and you’ll notice that the cumulative non-Asian customers are now becoming a sizeable minority. Thus, bearing witness to the fact that these Asian markets have expanded beyond the expected targeted constituency. Bottom line, here's why the Asian grocery stores have been expanding so rapidly in our area:

even Ravensworth is being polluted. Its amazing that sleepy neighborhood held off the Koreans this long. Annandale is made up of Koreans that want to isolate and shut out non-Koreans (except for incoming cash that is). They only buy goods and services from their own and they never contribute to the schools (except by cheating to get into TJ which the have also made their own).

No it's Springfield across the street on port Royal and across Braddock. You have to cross the beltway and go North of Braddock - is in Springfield. The next closest town is North Springfield then Annandale. It's not in Annandale and Annandale is not across the street.

Jam-packed with people with no manners. While there is a lot of seafood, the whole "customers can just grab the seafood with their bare hands" aspect of it is revolting. They have seafood in shallow bins on the floor that someone could easily drop something bad into and a busy help-yourself ice barrel that some customers were also using to toss their trash from the free food samples. The good prices on some things will NOT make up for the steep psychic toll (and potential gastrointestinal distress) shopping here will require.

How was the parking? I have heard that there were traffic jams and no parking at the opening. Hopefully this wont turn into Asian demo derby there. I doubt the traffic will help other non-Asian stores like the Swiss Bakery. Asians wont spend money in white owned businesses if they can possibly help it.

Koreans adore Hi Class goods and services, And yes they keep their Korean culture with their main food items, but French Cooking, French Baking , fine foods from around the world and many other good things they like.

My Korean friends will never set foot into a white owned bakery or any other store if there is a Korean alternative. Swiss Bakery advertises their location as being in Springfield because it is, (wait for it), located in Springfield. Lotte advertises its location and its new "Annandale Location" because, though not located in Annandale, they wish to send the signal to Korean Nationals that they are part of the closed Annandale Korean Community.

correction Audrey Moore Park across Braddock Rd. (a 6 lane 'street') is Annandale. Annandale is located within a few hundred meters of the store. The store is located in Springfield, VA. Lotte, for reasons of its own has adopted the concept that Annandale, VA is now a region not a census-designated place (CDP).

Parking lot near full day 3 over at Ravensworth. Celebrate diversity!

Sampled many Korean Items Mandu, others, Bought a few things and ate Soon Doubie Jiggie there with rice, Kimchi and Korean radish. Very Good! Saw many nice veggies . Parking was not a big deal. Great to have them there!

Keep an eye on your pets Ravensworth - Koreans despise pets anywhere but on their dinner plates. And Im pretty sure the reason the Produce at Lotte is so cheap is it is raised in Mexico where they use human feces as fertilizer.

How long till all the non-Asian shops there are completely replaced with Korean shops?

Will they ever backfill Smith & Clarkeson Deli? Been vacant a long time. Now that the Lotte infestation is complete who would want to operate a restaurant next to a Korean supermarket. No one from the market will eat there. Whitey wont be able to park near the site.

i think the owner has screwed himself and all the tenants with Lotte.

Friends in the area told me the owner tried to get most of the mainstream groceries, but they either were not interested or they insisted on extremely generous rental terms.

Owner of the stripmall got greedy, and now has a Korean ghetto instead of just an ugly stripmall.

There is a large-ish strip mall/lowrise mall/shopping center, or whatever you want to call it, in Merrifield, that hosts a big Asian supermarket, the Unique thrift store, and a selection of restaurants including Five Guys. One driveway over on Gallows Rd is the entrance to a group of restaurants including Sweetwater Tavern, Chevy's, and some others. Asian supermarkets can bring customers to the shopping center just like anything else. Just because a person wakes up one morning resolved to pick up a 25-lb sack of rice doesn't mean he'll have an aversion to grabbing a Five Guys meal while he's there.

Laughable - you ever see an asian family eating at five guys? Five guys gets business from the Gym that is there. That shopping center is a sewer thanks to the Korean super and Unique. Its disgusting and is the exact opposite of the mosaic and the sweetwater minicenter. you literally proved the point of crappy korean supers belonging in ghetto market centers.

Why are Korean grocery stores so disgusting? Do Asians have no sense of aesthetics? Are Koreans as bad as Chinese in their willingness to cut every possible corner to maximize short-term profits? Someday, I'd like to see an Asian business that takes a Wegman's philosophy and builds something of lasting value.

Wow, ok a few things to clarify for the knuckle-draggers. Yes, of course there are some better newer asian markets than the older "fishier" ones. That market next to Unique, called Great Wall, is Chinese owned and caters to Chinese customers. Huuuuge difference from the Korean markets (Hmart and Lotte). By far the best, most clean, respectable asian market is Hmart (at least their newer stores).

An affinity for shopping at Great Wall or H Mart does not necessarily correlate with ethnicity. There are a lot of Born In The USA types who, due to work or military service, have spent time in Asia. When such folks return home from their postings abroad, they often find products at Great Wall, H Mart, or Lotte, or a smaller, independent store, that they enjoyed in Hong Kong or Seoul, or wherever. While Wegman's is world-class in every way, they aren't going to have the same atmospherics as Great Wall. Some people might like the way a bulk spice section smells. That doesn't mean the presence of a supermarket with a bulk spice section automatically turns the shopping center into a 'ghetto market center' whatever that is. Pho, sushi, kimchee, curry, vegetable lo mein...where would we be without them?

In the area so I thought I would check it out. As a general grocery it was unimpressive. There were some good buys in fresh vegetables. They clearly have a good selection of east Asian items, but I don't know enough to evaluate those. Will need to go back with someone who knows east Asian cooking better. And yes it does smell strongly of fish.

Also it seems other stores in the shopping center are already owned/operated by east Asians. Meanwhile it looks like Swiss Bakery is expanding and the woodworking shop from Springfield looks to be moving in.

Make all the excuses and deflections you want, but the fact remains that Korean grocery stores are... gross!

Don't shop Asian stores if you find them gross. Judging by the number of people shopping at H Mart and Great Wall, their margins seem healthy enough. If they stop meeting the needs of their customers they will go out of business. For now, it looks like they're doing just fine. By staying away, you enhance the shopping experience for everyone else.

These ghetto stores do have their place. Helps keep the savages out of my Wegmans.

Asian stores grains have weevils. Its not racist it is a fact. I have never had weevils from grains purchased in non-asian stores. I suggest you purchase a 50 lb bag of rice they store on the fetid floor and leave it open in your pantry for a week to find out what happens. Enjoy throwing out each and every box or bag of food in your home.

When that happens we just donate the stuff to the food pantry and wallow in feelings of self-righteousness--usually on the fetid floor.

I finally went into Lotte - what a dump. A brand new store and they have dirty palates and stacks of rice on the floor. What gives? I thought this was supposed to be an 'upscale' Korean super. Instead its gross. The seafood department looks and smells like a tsunami disaster area. Gross recently thawed fish stacked everywhere. The meat section looks like it came straight out of the pages of The Jungle.

My kid and I were the only non-Asian people in the entire store oh and yes people were operating their carts like idiots.

Had to park in the back to use the post office Sat. The center is not even 100% leased. Lotte patrons are filling the parking lot. Btw spaces Behind the center were nearly full as well.

Blaghhh!! I've been to the new Lotte a couple of times and they definitely cut a few corners (by Asian market standards). The aisles are narrow as fuck, the new seafood area is infact old/dirty looking, and the fluorescent ceiling lights are cheap and blinding.

Shop Hmart, its way better. I can't wait for the new store in Burke.

I really wanted to like it, but the Hmart near Annandale High School is much better.

More selection, better pricing, fresher produce, easier to get in and out of.

For a brand new store they should have changed out the lighting and put in new flooring.

I refuse to go into Lotte or Hmart...but only because Harris Teeter and Trader Joe's have better selections of slutty white women.

A Zucchini, A Red Pepper, Lemon, Lime, Big Naval Orange, Peach, Pear, a bag of Shallots all for 6 dollars all good stuff and the cheapest place around.

On Fridays and Sat they have many Korean treats to taste. BBQ Eel, Squid, Bulgogi, Mandu Korean dumplings, Fish Cake, Soon Tofu.. Yum Yum..
