So, a police force that deals with this once every 5 years deserves to be paid 20k more than people on a force that must deal with it once a week? I've spoken closely with a veteran of the FCP Force, who was on the force for 20 years and not once fired a bullet, or had a bullet shot at him. This post didn't serve to insult the police force but to make the obvious point that they are vastly overpaid compared to forces that are using their guns EVERY DAY. No reason that someone who's typical day consists of hiding to pull people over gets payed 20 k more than someone who's typical day consists of robberies, murders, rapes, and gangs. OVERPAID CLOWNS, no matter how you put it. I'm guessing that you are a police hack...must be nice enjoying that salary that you dont deserve.

Not really sure why you think large cities which have much lower populations than Fairfax County are like the wild west. To show how ignorant you really are, if you talked to 1,000 cops nationwide, usually less than 2 percent are involved in shootings during their entire careers, perhaps your friend worked a desk job as many of them try to get into after coming on and becoming slugs. Kind of like the Marines have cooks and barbers. The increased salary is more due to the fact they cant have the cops only affording homes 4 counties away then it would be cost effective. Both sides have decent points, not to be the one ruining all the fun around here, but both sides are also very wrong in a couple of ways. One, Kennedy was mentally ill, which makes the situation tragic, but does not make him a scumbag, as much as people wish to have someone to blame for any tragedy. Perhaps consider blaming our metal health facilities, or the doctors that prescribed a mentally ill patient adderall, or any other link in the system that failed him and failed the police officers that were killed.

To the other guy, cops can't afford to become complacent to violence, because that would open another opportunity. And from what I understand (maybe incorrectly because of TV stereotypes) but cops are generally taken off the streets for a significant period of time after firing their weapons, so there aren't really cops going out shooting day in day out. Also, perhaps consider that the cost of living around here is fucking insane, so they might be paid on a cost of living scale. Sure, NYC might be more expensive, but Richmond is cheap as dirt, and so are lots of other cities.

I think both of you need to open your eyes and minds a bit more. Now go to your rooms and don't come out til I call you for dinner.

James, You've raised some good points, and i respect your mild mannerness....I still have a hard time believing that fairfax county cops are paid so well. As mentioned before, ive spoken with a 20 year vet, who never once shot a gun in the name of crime prevention, and was never shot at. My point is that police should be paid based on the average, everyday danger that they face based on the location, which is why i say that ny cops who have a much, much higher crime rate than anywhere in northern VA, should be paid to reflect the everyday sacrifice and danger that they could potentially face

I don't think any of them get paid enough for what they do daily.
