What's the difference between skeet shooting and trap shooting?

It looks like the same sport to me. Clay discs get thrown in the air and people shoot them. Explain...

With Google, you actually have a chance of finding the answer to your question?

Let me know if my contest entry wins.

Oh, okay. Here's some *slightly* helpful information.

Skeet shooting and trap shooting are two different forms of clay pigeon shooting.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clay_pigeon_shooting

Trap shooting

Targets are thrown either as singles or doubles from one or more traps situated some 15 m in front of the shooter, and are generally going away from the firing point at varying speeds, angles and elevations.

Skeet shooting

Targets are thrown in singles and doubles from 2 trap houses situated some 40 metres apart, at opposite ends of a semicircular arc on which there are seven shooting positions. The targets are thrown at set trajectories and speeds.

A simplified explanation:

In skeet you are shooting at a target that is generally flying left to right or right to left in front of you. In trap the target is generally flying away from you.

Thanks, Bill. Is one more difficult than the other or is it just a different skill set?

More different than easier or harder. You'll find people who argue either way. Look on YouTube and you'll find some videos that show the differences.

Skeet is harder in that you have crossing shots and have to come back on doubles but you know where the track of the targets will be and they're closer so somewhat easier in that respect.

Trap is harder in that you don't necessarily know what the track of the target will be and they're headed away from you and longer shots.

Both are fun. I like trap better myself but that's just my own preference. There's also sporting clays which is a series of stations with different shots that simulate different game situations with shots crossing, going away, bouncing, etc.

Isn't one simply a sport and the other is a simulation of actual bird hunting?

I like trap better just because I can't hit squat on a skeet range
for some reason. Do just fine with trap though. Tried competition
trap once years ago and found out the ones who consistently win
matches are retirees who have the time to practice all day.

I am not that good at either, so other opinions may be better. I generally find trap easier because the targets always start at the same position. You do have to fire quicker though. Also there are skeet shooting positions that I am fairly good from.

In either at a competitive level pretty much one person wins because the other misses. 25 out of 25 amounts to par. Out of 500 one will shoot 498 and the other 499.

You got that right. The first time I entered a competition I
had no idea what I was doing. Just going along with friends.
I was shocked when I made the qualifications as I hadn't fired
a shotgun in years. Fired 250 rounds that day and wound up being
eliminated early on. I stood by and watched and what my friends
had told me was true. It was a duel between two old guys in their
70's and a wait to see who missed first. Next morning I woke
up with a shoulder so sore I could barely get out of bed.

Another thing happened that day that really got my attention.
My best friend had been shooting with a Remington 870 for
years but finally got the money together for a $5,000.00
trap gun. (this was a few years ago) That day he didn't do
any better with the new trap gun than he had with his old
870. This guy was really good. He used to go to the Nationals
in Vandalia, Ohio ever year but used to complain that there
was no way he'd ever score at the top until he was a geezer too.

Skeet is harder for beginners because you have to memorize the flight paths at each station and what the correct hold is. Trap is easier for beginners because all you have to do is face forward and the targets are in front of you. Trap is actually harder to master because the flight paths are random within a certain area while skeet is the same every time.

Wouldn't be cheaper and easier to just go duck hunting?
Might also get dinner.
