Chicks aren't digging the annual atheist support group meeting

LOL @ these zealots. The fact that they have these types of meetings makes them as pathetic as evangelical Christians. What a bunch of losers.

http://www.religionnews.com/culture/gender-and-sexuality/do-atheists-have-a-sexual-harassment-problem

(RNS) As skeptics, atheists and humanists prepare to gather for their largest meeting in Las Vegas this weekend, attendance by women is expected to be down significantly.

Officials for The Amazing Meeting, or TAM, said Wednesday (July 11) that women would make up 31 percent of the 1,200 conference attendees, down from 40 percent the year before. A month before the conference, pre-registration was only 18 percent women, organizers said.

The explanations are many -- the bad economy, that women, as caregivers, are less able to get away, and that more men than women identify as skeptics, whose worldview rejects the supernatural and focuses on science and rationality.

But in the weeks preceding TAM, another possible explanation has roiled the nontheist community. Online forums have crackled with charges of sexism in TAM’s leadership and calls for the ouster of D.J. Grothe, the male president of the James Randi Educational Foundation, TAM’s organizer. In June, Rebecca Watson, a skeptic blogger and speaker, canceled her TAM appearance because, she said on her blog, she does “not feel welcome or safe.”

Other nontheists -- both male and female -- have shared stories of unwanted sexual attention at nontheist gatherings, including propositions for sex and unwelcome touching. Chatter has ranged from calls for more women to attend nontheist events to personal attacks on prominent female skeptics for discussing harassment. Meanwhile, two more skeptic/feminist bloggers announced they will not attend TAM.

Two white slave owners die and find themselves waiting at the Pearly Gates. One of them says to the other, "Hey, I'd like to get a look at God before we get up to the gate. How about you lift me up so I can see what he looks like?"

The other guy lifts the first one up so he can get a better view and says, "Well? What does God look like?"

"She's a nigger."

You'd think ancient scrolls considered to be "holy" in the 21st century wouldn't be so confused like the bible.

Genesis 32:30

Jacob says "for I have seen God face to face"

Then later in the "new testament" (written centuries later by another unknown author) says

John 1:18

"No man hath seen God at any time"

This stuff is silly, just shut up and deal with reality for a change.

It really bothers you when atheists get together. Why? Lots of people have gatherings. Democrats, republicans, Neighborhoods and communities, PTA, Unions, People from various countries get together and have festivals, etc... What makes atheists any different? They discuss unfair state and federal policies and how best to organize against them. You need look no further than what's happening in Texas, the Carolinas right now or Alabama. Is this what really bothers you?

WTF are you doing on this website? You must have a vested interest far beyond calling atheists names and being upset because they gather together occasionally.

This whole sexual harassment issue is the work of one stupid woman on Youtube named Skeptchic. She is a whiny little bitch that is upset because she got trolled on Youtube. Now she thinks she's going to be raped at the meetings. The truth is, no one gives the slightest shit about her and I doubt anyone wants to rape her.

You think I am bothered? Simply because I find these twits to be weak minded fools who feel the need to band together in order to justify their existence, does not mean I am bothered by them. In fact, I find it quite humorous - as indicated by my LOL. I will mock whiny bitches who gather en mass no matter their belief system.

It was linked to on another website. My vested interest is making fun of idiots who need some sort of support group. Again, you are confusing my mockery of idiots for being upset or bothered. Your persecution complex is blinding your rational thinking process.

Imagine that. A groupthink moron with a persecution complex is overreacting? Also, for the record, everyone associated with this event is a whiny little bitch.

Mark 11

12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in
the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he
reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.
14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And
his disciples heard him say it.

TAM is not an Atheist support group. It is an Amazing Meeting. Issues about science and other rational things are discussed. And the fact that woman got propositioned in Las Vegas, WOW. I have never heard of such a thing.

So you "Christians" go to a support group every Sunday and then complain accusing us of having one once a year, that most of us don't even attend.

The aesthetic movement is growing. Deal with it.

And atheism is not a religion in the same way way "off" is not a tv channel.

And maybe she was propositioned. It is a terrible thing - but keep this in mind - she is an adult capable of making her own decisions. Have "Christians" ever propositioned someone NOT in that category?

Look - the Catholics will not let women become priests or let priests marry. Then tell the women how to behave.

Some Lutheran denominations will not allow women on the alter.

Christians do not have a good history of the way they treat women

"As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached?" (1 Cor. 14:33b-36 NIV).

Fairfaxunderground rules: Lilliputions, not ok. Midgettville ok. I got it now.

Can you imagine going to a church every week that thinks this is "THE WORD OF GOD"?

Christians are as wacky as the fundie Muslims.

3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and
the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors
his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head
uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.
6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her
hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or
her head shaved, then she should cover her head.

7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of
God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from
woman, but woman from man;
9 neither was man created for woman, but
woman for man.
10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have
authority over her own head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless,
in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But
everything comes from God.

Why are you so defensive?

The fact that you use the word "us" indicates your level of idiotic groupthink. Besides, you say "you Christians" as if I am a believer in any organized religion. You couldn't be farther from the truth. The fact that you NEED these meetings is evidence of your feeble mind. This is an annual convention of morons, much like the Reason Rally, on a national level. Meetings of atheist zealots happen every week in many local communities, much like religious ceremonies. We have numerous ones in this area.

> The aesthetic movement is growing. Deal with it.

I refuse to accept any belief system that wants to impose its viewpoints on anyone, no matter what religion or non religion it is.

> And atheism is not a religion in the same way way

Perhaps, but it doesn't mean atheism is not full of idiotic zealots who want to impose their view on everyone else.

> And maybe she was propositioned. It is a terrible

Relevant how? Do you want to be classified in the same category of Christians? The fact that you even want to compare and contrast is indicative of how invested you are in this belief system.

> Look - the Catholics will not let women become

> how to behave.

Great, your high minded zealotry is on par with Catholic fools. You must be proud.

> Some Lutheran denominations will not allow women

The fact that you are comparing atheists to Lutherans indicates your commitment to idiotic ideas.

> Christians do not have a good history of the way

Apparently, atheists do not as well.

Quoting idiotic fairy tales is as moronic as holding a convention of atheists.

What's the matter? You are free to mock and criticize Christians, Muslims, Jews, etc freely and ad nauseum, but when someone points out how silly atheists are you resort to calling them a troll? OP is right. You are a loser and a whiny bitch.

Hmmm. As silly as the groupthink going on at TAM or the reason rally? You are going to have to try harder.

This is like a Christian saying, "their building of hospitals and administering healthcare to millions is the silliest fuckin think I ever heard of."

You of course could rebut with the many silly beliefs that they also espouse just as I pointed out the silly parts of the atheist belief system.

Simply put, just because one part of the belief system is rational does not mean many of the adherants to the belief are rational.

> Of course there are dieties!

Are dieties people who go on fad diets?

It doesn't surprise me that you make that accusation though. It is uninspired, unimaginative and unintelligent.

Unlike you, I don't need to identify myself with a bunch of other morons in order for my life to have meaning. You clearly need the support group because you can't cope or think for yourself.

OP, why do you care so much?

I'm not sure if TAM is the same yearly meeting as the one that Skeptic Magazine holds, but if it is, then there is significantly more involved than just Bible bashing.

As to support groups, one of the benefits of religion is that it has a community aspect, I can't fault atheists for missing that aspect and wanting to emulate it in someway. The difficulty is that, with atheists, there is less common ground between them than there is with your garden variety religious theist.

What's it to you? I simply find people who feel the need to be part of groupthink ridiculously stupid. A main theme in these meetings is simply ridiculing and bashing others because of their beliefs in an effort to prop up their own belief system. It is pathetic when theists do it and pathetic when atheists do it.

I'm just curious as to why you are so upset about it. Have you been to one? Do you think any sort of meeting like this type is filled with 'groupthink'?

So, again, why so serious?

Also, when do theists do this sort of thing (gather to bash the opposition)?

There wasn't alot of bible bashing at the reason rally either, and most of that was from the comedians. No one was preaching "there is no god!". How ridiculous would that be? Most of the serious topics were about freedom of religion, separation of church & state, the need for better science education, the need for more rational political debate, opposition to the creationist/ID/anti-science movement, the effects of religious oppression in other countries, negative effects of religion on people and their families, etc.

It's pretty funny if anyone thinks it was some kind of church-like ceremony to affirm the non-existence of gods. It was as much of a political event as it was a nonreligion event.

A+ for consistency!

Again, hardly upset. Maybe if you keep saying it you somehow think I will get upset. I have been to more than one of these types of meetings and they attract the same type of whiny people.

In numerous writings of ministers and pastors they discuss how to deal with atheists and why they are wrong. When training missionaries, etc. much time is spent on how to successfully confront atheists.

I toggle between athieism and agnosticism.

I'm all against silly superstition as much as anyone, but organized athiests seem about as much fun as the guys who go to UFO meetings.

It was somebody who grew up in the Westboro Baptist Church, who fled the family and spent years being harassed by them because he ditched their beliefs.

I guess people like that are idiots and should just keep there big mouth shut.

Use the extreme example to make your case. Good logical reasoning skills you have there. No wonder you are so attracted to this nonsense. Was it heavy to prop up that straw man?

lol, a religious person accusing someone of 'nonsense'.

Like I said, I specifically went to see Dawkins speak and hear some punk rock c/o Bad Religion. I'd probably go to a Tea Party rally if those two were on the bill.

Your rhetoric in this thread indicates the opposite.

Here's your first sentence:
"LOL @ these zealots. The fact that they have these types of meetings makes them as pathetic as evangelical Christians. What a bunch of losers".

Also, it's kind of interesting that you say that you've been to more than one of these things...What type of person do you consider yourself to be? A 'whiny' person?

So then please explain - did they have a guest speaker, who's talk was 'why the Bible sucks' or something?

Writings of ministers and pastors are not the same thing as meetings and gatherings.

LOL = "laughing out loud" Do upset people laugh?

I consider myself a person who was leaving religion and wanted to explore other belief systems. All I found at these types of events were whiny people. Not being a whiny person myself, I decided I did not want to associate myself with those kinds of losers.
> So then please explain - did they have a guest

You don't need a guest speaker when everyone is sitting around telling each other their stories about encountering theists since the last time they met. "Let me tell you about Joe the Buddhist. He did blah blah blah. Can you believe how stupid that is?!?" Next person: "Oh yeah, Sarah the Jewish girl told me......what an idiot!"

They even were talking about legislative outreach strategies.

Which is also why I wrote: "When training missionaries, etc. much time is spent on how to successfully confront atheists."

You quoted it, you must not have read it.

These are done in group settings.

To paraphrase someone - yes, we do not have an old book. We could use On the Origin of Species, but it does not saty say there is no god.

We need a magician who can turn water into wine, and walk on water. We could use Penn Teller, but they say up front there magic is not real.

I could go on but you get the point.

And why does this one anonymous attack attack and attack again? Me thinks you protest too much.

You are free not to respond with your idiocy. Don't you have some support group meeting to get to?

Are we to take your statements on the "miracles" of Jesus as not attacking their faith? Let's here some more whining.

Actually I was referring to the "zealots", "pathetic", and "losers" rhetorical quips.

You went to these events several times though. As to the type of people, perhaps that's just who you interacted with.

So the actual event didn't have any speeches that focused on how much the Bible sucked or what have you. It was, what, the people at your table? The people next to you?

And from that insignificant sample group you've determined all of them to be pathetic whiny losers, to such a degree that you have to complain about them on this forum?

No, I read that - it's just that's not what I was asking for - you shifted the question and I guess you thought no one would catch it. I was asking specifically about when theists did this sort of thing; ie, gather around to bash the opposition.

You then answered that when they went away to training they did so, but this is not a similar situation (and further, training to be apologists is not the same thing as sitting around bashing the opposition).

those are words describing people at these events. They imply no emotion whatsoever.

It depends on your definition of several. Perhaps, but I went to more than one organization and have interacted with people for years who still go to these types of places. They are all the same.

Go and find out yourself. They aren't that hard to find. They are run in all different types of formats. Some are like happy hours, some are like AA meetings. It really depends what you are looking for.

> And from that insignificant sample group you've

There is far more evidence of their whiny nature. This thread is but one more. Watch the videos. Read their literature. They have a TON of it. These people want to change minds and to do that they need to break down the theists point of view. They hold workshops on just how to do this. Dollars to donuts there is one at TAM.

I can see that my "complaints" have hit a nerve with you. Sorry for making fun of you. Better now?

Seriously? Look up the two words in the dictionary. If you still don't understand it, get back to me. Actually, if you don't understand it, don't get back to me.

Sure, once you start putting qualifiers on your definition of group, it is not the same thing. Good job there.

Rhetorically inflammatory words. If you had no emotion about the event, you probably wouldn't be posting on this forum to complain about it. Your entire OP is entirely negative and set to frame the participants at these events in a certain light.

If you truly had no strong feelings about it, why the charged words? It doesn't make any sense to me.

Why the need to say "My vested interest is making fun of idiots who need some sort of support group. "

That seems like they really irritate you, that you do have 'emotion' involved here, since you do have a 'vested interest' in this.

> It depends on your definition of several. Perhaps, but I went to more than one > organization and have interacted with people for years who still go to these

Again, I think it is indicative of the type of people you interact with or met, not necessarily of all or even the majority of the people who go there. It's difficult to say though, since I don't have a glimpse as to what you actually experienced, nor what kind of interaction you've had with people for years. Are these friends of yours?

> Go and find out yourself. They aren't that hard to find. They are run in all

I don't really have all that much interest in going just to get a feel for the crowd. There have been similar events that I've wanted to go to, but they are expensive (generally in California).

> There is far more evidence of their whiny nature. This thread is but one more. > Watch the videos. Read their literature. They have a TON of it. These people

It seems to me that you go out of your way to participate in threads, read literature, seek out videos, and go to meetings that consist of people you find are pathetic, whiny, losers. I find *that* behavior a little odd.

> I can see that my "complaints" have hit a nerve with you. Sorry for making fun > of you. Better now?

I've never been to one of these, so your complaints cannot be targeting me. I just find your rather odd in a peculiar sort of way.

You are trying to distance yourself from something you actively engage in - not only going to these things, but actively bashing people in them (in the same manner that they would, presumably, do about theists in their 'support groups').

I think you protest too much.

> Seriously? Look up the two words in the dictionary. If you still don't
> understand it, get back to me. Actually, if you don't understand it, don't get > back to me.

You misunderstand me, I meant in reference to your specific experience. Were the organizers/speakers talking about legislative outreach programs or were some people next to you talking about this? Was it random noise in the rest room?

> And I told you. When they are getting their training (in a group setting).

Okay, from what I gather, you consider the TAM as the same sort of thing as training for a ministry, correct?

> Sure, once you start putting qualifiers on your definition of group, it is not > the same thing. Good job there.

Well, it's *not* the same thing. Even creation conferences aren't atheist bashing sessions. In fact, training to be a preacher (requiring a degree in divinity) is not simply atheist bashing.

Radiophile, Pangloss and Meep, Loserville is a troll who has no rational position or argument and is just trying to get a rise out of you. I've tried to converse with her before when she used the exact same "Group think" "whiny" "Anti atheist" rant a few months ago.

Most of us know who this really is and if it isn't, he/she is trying their hardest to be that person. The committee is reforming here on FU and it explains the current rush of troll posts and thread bumping.

At least Loserville chose the right username. Fits her perfectly.

LOL. Now you are calling me a chick. What next? Are you going to call me gay? I you feel so insulted, just don't come back to this thread.

You have not attempted to engage in any rational debate about this. You just got all bent out of shape because I made fun of your athiest support group.

Pangloss has at least intelligently questioned me, you started by whining.

when ten thousand hoodlums trash the mall to spew hatred and spread their message of global apartheid, decent people should stand up for what's right and attack them. atheists are addicted to natural selection and have a racist agenda (ethnic cleansing via social darwinism). that's something today's Christians should be fighting against. Atheism = Global Apartheid

Actually the only angry thing I saw that day was from some pro-religion protestor. He was shouting at some girl wearing a Georgetown sweatshirt. Something about "How can you support a catholic school like Georgetown if you don't believe in God? Georgetown is a religious institution, how dare you wear there name to an atheism rally".

Not really "spewing hatred" I guess, but he was shouting at her. Sorta shows you the thought process of people who really get bothered by this kind of stuff.

Oh, and the Westboro folks were there too. Not sure I can even consider that as "spewing hatred" anymore, they're basically like real-life trolls.

One example from the 200 people that attended that thing. I bet he must be representative of all the dipshits that believe in the resurrection.

On the other hand, we had athiests actually delare thier anger with pride: "I am angry that Rick Santorum is a viable candidate for president," said Greta Christina, a prominent atheist blogger to cheers and whistles.

No doubt Santorum is an idiot and a fool, but the point is that their was anger expressed by the groupthink atheists.

But you were just there for the punk band......

I was there because I thought Ted Nugent was going to come out and play "God Bless the Republican Party" with a guitar shaped like a bald eagle.

You have quite the eclectic taste in music....

Shitty, but eclectic.
