They were neither. They were Egyptians. They were probably fairly closely related to the Berbers, who lived to the west and south, and the Semitic peoples of the Levant to the east.

Even modern-day Egyptians are less than enamored of Pan-Arabism and prefer to think of themselves as Egyptians rather than Arabs.
