ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Dale Hunter quit as coach of the Washington Capitals on Monday after less than one full season in the job, telling the team he wants to return to his family in Canada.

"It was the right thing to do," Hunter said.

It would be interesting to know what it would've taken for him to stay. The Cup? I also think it says a lot that he walked away from one of the top 5 coaching jobs in the NHL. What does that say about coaching this roster?

I'd like to see them hire Larry Robinson or another caoch with at least one ring. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should they hire the next young up and coming coach looking. Remember Bruce Cassidy?

Al Koken believes Semin is gone. We can only hope...

Its time to wipe the slate clean of everything and start all over again starting with a new GM!

Hunter seems to enjoy the simple life. He had a nice NHL career and enjoys living in obscurity now. I don't blame the guy for not wanting to uproot his whole life for the shit show down here.

John Stevens is an assistant coach w/LAK. He coached Philly to the ECF in '08 after beating the Caps in the first round. LAK are playing the best playoff hockey this year.

Who else is there?

"Enjoys living in obscurity"? He and his brother own, manage, coach and run the concession stand's deep fryer for the London Knights of the OHL and have since 2000. One of Dale's sons is an assistant and I believe his parents are involved, too. London, Ontario is a city of 350,000 people. That is not obscurity. Now if he had gone home to Petrolia a town of 5,000 people that's pushing obscurity. Fun fact: Current captain of the London Knights? Jarrett Tinordi...Marc's son.

@More Complete In addition to L-Ro, I also think Mike Keenan is available. The word today was also that prior to Boudreau's hiring, Barry Melrose was BEGGING GM GM for the the job. Thank you, B-Mel...no.

Didn't Melrose leave espn for a coaching job that lasted for about 20 days or something ridiculously short before getting fired and going back to espn?

I felt sort of bad for the guy. He'd show up at the bar with a couple friends to have some drinks and have to put up with people asking for pictures or trying to engage him in small talk. He seemed like a laid-back dude and it goes with the territory if you're a public figure that you have to be nice to the fans, but still...

I got to meet him, Neil Sheehy, and Bengt Gustafen (spelling?) at a restaurant back in the day. I was only in high school, so he actually talked to my friends and I for a few minutes. Im not sure he would have done it if we were adults. He is a laid back dude. He said he considered himself a farmer and not a hockey player. I knew he wouldn't stay here. Everything you read about him says he loves owning and running the junior team he has. He probably did it as a favor to his old team more than any other reason.

No surprise there. He played like he was "gone" often enough. Wish him well with his next team but he isn't worth the 7 mil or whatever the Caps are paying him.

Interesting indeed. I've heard Caps assistant Jim Johnson thrown around a bit also.

Mike Knuble was asked today who he thought had the best playoffs on the team. He responded by saying Matt Hendricks was doing all the kinds of things you would expect from the team captain.

Ovechkin's response to Knuble's remarks..."Well, everyone's jealous of the captain..."

Knuble won't be back but, regardless of who's coaching this team these players have some things to work out before next season.

Oh...and Semin got off a plane in Switzerland today as he travelled to join the CCCP's hockey team at the world championships and said he was surprised to hear about his agent's remarks and as far as he's concerned nothing has been decided about whether he will return to Washington or not next season.
