digital HD/DVD recording

If I hookup a DVD Recorder to my new LCD TV with an HDMI cable, will I be able to record stuff?

I'm clueless, and it's hard to find the right info by googling these terms.

My DVD recorder has an "HDMI OUT" port. If I plug an HDMI cable from this port, straight into my TV's HDMI port, will I be able to record stuff from TV?

It seems like I'd only be able to play DVD's, but the confusing documentation makes it sound like I will also be able to record stuff.

I'm only asking because I own a single HDMI cable. I have no way to test this unless I go out and buy a new HDMI cable-and if it didn't work I'd be wasting money.

Anyone do this?
