I found something, what now?
Posted by: finderskeepers ()

i found an item worth about $200, maybe a little less. (according to the manufacturer's website)
it may or may not have sentimental value to the loser. definitely replaceable (of course if you have around $200)

-should I just keep it?

-turn it into the place of business where i found it (knowing full well the employees will keep the item after no one asks)?

-should i contact the place of business with an untraceable email account and have them contact me back with specifics if anyone asks about it?

if the first option: where's a good pawn shop around here if i dont want to keep it?

Please take this item to a pawn shop and donate all proceeds to pay for Carlos Hernandez to have the proper burial that his parents cannot afford to give him.

You can post a lost and found notice on Craigslist which will give you an anonymous way for people to get in touch with you to describe the item and where/when they lost it. You can then print the notice out and hand it to someone in the store. If someone comes looking for the item the store can hand them that sheet which will give them enough info to get on Craigslist and contact you through there.

Where did you find it? Is it dirty, does it need to be cleaned up at all?

Submit a "found property" report to the police... 30 days and no claim, it's yours.

And I have to echo the others, what is it?

Yes, please do tell.

There is always the possibility that I may be interested in purchasing it off of you, and pawn shops will always rip you off (damn dirty gypsies...).

Who would want a used wedding band? I say call the business and ask if someone came in looking for something.

To keep a wedding is a dirty thing to do.

You're SURE it's a 'wedding' ring, right?

If so, fuck it - just turn it in to the police.

are you implying that it might not be a "wedding" band? ok sure, maybe its a gay wedding band.

i looked it up online (based on markings on the inside.)
retail value is $192, it has little to no wear.

I didn't 'imply' anything. I only asked whether you were certain. There are many types of rings, some of which I would be interested in.

And if that was supposed to be a joke, it was stupid and unfunny.

Funny that you would assume I'm gay based upon that, but I really could care less.

If it's someone's wedding ring, give it to the police. Don't pawn it. That would be messed up.

Just to add a caveat to this about listing it on Craigslist. Someone did a test a few years back to show how people are dishonest and what a crap shoot Craigslist can be. They put up a notice that they had found a ring around a certain location (of course, the ring was fiction), it didn't stop them from getting emails from people claiming to have lost their ring around that area. Several people.

Some would give up when asked about what kind of ring it was, teh material made from, any special markings, etc. Some people would keep at it and after gleening info, use that the next time they would inquire, under a different email address of course. Person A would say they lost it, the founder would ask questions like what it wa made of and if they got the answer wrong, lo and behold, someone else would send an email a few minutes later and would add that piece of information.

Emailer 1: "I lost my ring around that area".
Founder: "What is it made from?
Emailer 1: "Gold".
Founder: "Naww, sorry, this looks like white gold or platinum."
Emailer 2: "I lost my wedding band last week, its made of white gold.
Founder:"How many stones in it?"
Caller 1:"Uh, one".
Founder: "Sorry, it has three".
Emailer 3: I lost my ring last week around that area, its made of white gold and has three stones in it."
Founder:"OK, what type of stones?"
Emailer 3: "Diamonds."
Founder: "nope, sorry, its all chocolate diamonds".
etc., etc.

So beware of Craigslist.

One word from the OP - karma. Do your best to return it. It's not like you found a $20 bill - a wedding band means something - especially when it's new. 10 years down the road maybe something else :)

With the Climbing gold prices, I'd say the op found a treasure. I think the op is nice for trying to get the ring to it's owner. Craigslist is good. I can't say I'd ever call the police if I lost something. so I'm not sure if it's worth getting the police involved. Seems like a hassle, but I'm also Leary of cops.

If it was near a sjopping center, calling the stores would be good. I'd post my ad for several weeks on craigslist and if no one claimed it I'd hold on to it as an investment.

i dont believe in karma. so no problem!!

also, i dont know how everyone is thinking that I'm keeping this damn thing. I would love to get it back to the owner. I just know what will happen if i turn it in where I found it.

I once found a wedding ring and turned it in to the police. It looked valuable too. The owner claimed it, and asked the cops for my address, which I authorized them to release to the ring's owner. Many months later, the cheap bastard sends me a piece of shit $10 fucking fruit basket as a "reward." Turns out the ring was worth $5k+. Cheap motherfucker.

How do you expect the owner to find it? IF I lost something I try to retrace my steps and ask people if they had seen or heard of anyone finding what I was looking for. You took the ring from where someone lost it, didn't report it to anyone there or turn it into anyone. Did you post any notice at the location that you had found something someone might be looking for? You stated you didn't turn it in because the employees would have just kept it. How do you know that? and how are you different?
