You make an excellent point and I agree with you, mostly. In the dragging case, he was dragged to his death BECAUSE he was black. Not just for the hell of it. Not because he did anything in particular, JUST because he was black. In cases like this, reporting race is an important part of the case and punishments are usually greater in hate crimes as well.
Your example of the hispanic man knifing a white woman is a great example of where race need not be mentioned. Unless further evidence determines the cause of the crime was based on race. The media sensationalizes everything now. This is one example. It's part of the reason the broadcast stations are losing viewers, yet they keep going farther and farther down the sensationalist path.
