Epic Battle: Jaxx vs. Gunnar Nelson!

LOL

Springfield's Jaxx rock club sues Gunnar Nelson

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-state-of-nova/post/springfields-jaxx-rock-club-sues-gunnar-nelson-for-slander/2011/08/30/gIQAES5ksJ_blog.html

Guess they're worried about their reputation, but seriously, do people really give a shit about what Gunnar Nelson has to say? The fact that he's still being interviewed amazes me. Even funnier- only 16 tickets were sold. Shocker!!

What's sort of interesting is that I've heard rumors about bands getting shafted there. It's still a decent club though and the owner seems like a nice dude. So I guess I'll have to pick Jaxx in this goofy fight for truth, justice, and the American way.

I've met and talked to Jay Nerdy when he recently acquired Sully's. He is a very nice and personable guy.

I can only say the best of comments about him.

It seems to me that Nerdy thought he had a handshake deal with Nelson's manager and he thought he fulfilled the terms of that deal. I think it's ridiculous for Gunner Nelson to go blabbing to the press two years later over $3,500 when it doesn't sound like Nelson's management ever brought up the perceived discrepancy with Nerdy in the first place.

"Jay Nedrey ducked out the back door with the bar til under his arm while we were on stage"

In order to duck out the back door, Nedrey would have had to walked through the pile of flesh that travels with the band and walk directly past the stage.

Unless he fled out the front back door which isn't the back door at all.

Looks like Jay Nedry has LOTS of buddies in DC -- blogging / writing the article and posting ridiculous comments to malign the reputation of two of the nicest artists in show business.
Handshake deals with national acts? SERIOUSLY????
It's business 101. National music acts are only booked with SIGNED contracts. They put everything in writing down to the snacks in the dressing room.
Amending a booking fee is NEVER done verbally. Any legitimate businessman knows this.

If Jay Nedry were really concerned about his own reputation, he'd pay his bills. Period. End of story.

Sounds like he's trying to milk some scandal for his own PR purposes and shake down some nice people for some cash. Shameful.

In fact, with adding up the legal bills and court filing fees he's racked up filing a frivolous lawsuit TWICE in 2 states, he has no doubt racked up at least 5 times what he owed the act (without interest). Plus, he's the only one rehashing the story maligning his own name and reputation -- when he could so easily just simply pay his outstanding debt and put it behind him.

Nelson is hardly a "national act" these days. And, yes, handshake deals are done all of the time. Especially when you are talking about $7,500.

This is Nelson 20 years after they were popular. It's not Eminem with some fucking contract rider to play at Verizon Center. Snacks in the dressing room? Are you fucking serious? The "dressing room" at Jaxx is probably the alley behind the place.

Yeah, well, seems to me this guy was defamed. Unless Nelson's management can show they did due diligence on collecting the money, they don't have shit.

If they are such nice guys why did gunner talk so much trash? Couldn't this have been settled in a "nicer" way?

Nelson changed their name to Nogales for the gig. No wonder only 16 people bought tickets.

Sounds like Nelson wants some free PR. No way Jaxx made money on paying out $4000.

Only 16 pre-show tickets sold is pretty sad, sounds like Nelson's manager and PR person were a sleep on the job.

A bet Meade Skelton could get more relatives and church ladies at a show.

Oops... the last comment was really pushing it.

90 minutes of what? They had, what, three songs? I guess they could do a couple of Ricky Nelson covers. Does that even get them to 60 minutes?

It doesn't sound like Nelson is pursuing the money at all. They waited more than 2 years then moaned about it to the press. If they really wanted the money, they could've filed a lawsuit a month after it happened. Sounds more like they're just bitter because they're washed-up has-beens.

Actually, it sounds to me like their "business manager" did the deal with Nerdly and didn't tell Nelson about it. He gave them their cut of the $4K, they said, "Where's the rest?" and their "business manager" said, "He stiffed us!" instead of being upfront and honest about the whole thing.

Does Mr. Nedry come from a family of wealth or hit it big with silver back in the 1980's
neither Jaxx or sully's look like joints that generate lots of money so I was thinking there must be some dollars behind these ventures

if the roadducks had opened for Gunnar you think might have gotten more than 16
does gunnar sing Lonesome Town?

Nelson makes $7500 an appearance? Wow. Eddie Money makes nearly $2 million a year on the state and county fair circuit.

Fairfaxunderground rules: Lilliputions, not ok. Midgettville ok. I got it now.

Keep in mind, that's before expenses. They have to pay the band and their travel, etc. I would be surprised if each netted much more than $1,000 per performance.

ive played jaxx and never had any problems with jay or jaxx personally but i know at least one local musician who he screwed over. the problem is with his business model where he expects the opening bands to do all the advertising and ticket sales for him. it's hard enough to pre-sell tickets to get people to see your show at jaxx, but when Nelson is the only thing you have to sweeten the deal with? No, he probably didn't make a lot of money on that show.

not saying he screwed Nelson or anything. jay is a good businessman but like every good business man he'll try to maximize his own profit first even if it's through dubious methods.

Jay is very racist and is constantly shouting the N-word out loud in the club and spreading neo-Nazi's. during that Nelson show he got up on stage at least 5 or 6 times and shouted the N-word at the crowd and started harassing minorities. You could tell Nelson was getting pissed, no wonder they're all mad at him now.

I have a feeling he probably called the manager and said, "We've sold 16 tickets. We're going to need to cancel" and the manager was like, "Well, we we are going to be in the area anyway, something is better than nothing. What CAN you pay?"

Then the manager simply forgot to tell Nelson, Nelson got pissed when they went over the books and then the manager threw the blame back on Jaxx.
