Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
I put in a good 4 hours out of a 8 hour day. I think that's fair, I'm not going to kill myself, like some fool. During the winter I put in alot less. I didn't accept a job in this Dept. to bust my ass and get a bloody hernia, plus I have alot of backaches, why make it worst. I collect a fair wage and I think I contribute alot for that. To reitterrate, I work a 4 hour day.
you must live next door to your job. apparently your commute is not long both ways and your lunch hr you say is 1/2 hr sometimes up to 3hrs. You most likely take your time eating your lunch for it to take up to 3hrs. But I bet you eat at your desk.
It really depends on how much work there is to do, today I've done just about nothing but monitor logs. I wouldn't really call that work since I'm just sitting around waiting for something to happen. Other days it is busy as hell and I can easily work my eight hours and then go home and log in and work another two or three. I think it all evens out in the end. My commute isn't as nice as yours but still under 30 minutes each way.
I'm at work for at least 8-9 hours each day and am productive for about 4 of those. But there are days where the only way I could have done less was to not show up at all.
Fuck work.

What funny about that is I used to intern at the EPA down town. Everday was packed full of "all hands" meetings. Everyone i ran into was on their way to a meeting, no matter what time of day it was.

In a time before self-employment, we had meetings to set up meetings about meetings.
Now the only meetings I have go like this:
"Hello,______. I'd like you to meet your replacement."
Whats interesting is that the American work force is considered more hard working than Western Europe. Which after reading a few of these posts, makes you have to wonder...what they hell are they doing all day?

I was over in Ireland a few years back to watch a new form of non-destructive testing in operation for a foundry operation. Boy, do they like a leisure approach to their industry. A day's work consists in one continuous break and alot of social malingering. I would estimate a good' days effort amounts to about 2 hours over 8. Then it's to the pub where the real work begins. God love them.

Its hard to put full 2-3 hours in when your hung over.
My brother lives in London and said the pubs are open at 6am so the people who operate heavy machinery can stop in for a pint before heading off to work.
