This Kind of Email Scam is NEW to Me...
Posted by: WingNut ()
Date: July 06, 2011 08:44AM

Received an email from "xxxxx@policeagency.com"

Here it is-

New York State — Department of Motor Vehicles

UNIFORM TRAFFIC TICKET

POLICE AGENCY

NEW YORK STATE POLICE

Local Police Code

THE PERSON DESCRIBED ABOVE IS CHARGED AS FOLLOWS

Time

7:25 AM
Date of Offense

07/02/2011
IN VIOLATION OF

NYS V AND T LAW

Description of Violation

SPEED OVER 55 ZONE

TO PLEAD, PRINT OUT THE ENCLOSED TICKET AND SEND IT TO TOWN COURT, CHATAM HALL., PO BOX 117

(end of email)

There is then a Zip file attachment(!)... I like this already. Is it a virus? Is it some way to wire money to Nigeria? ( I hear that NY state now outsources their traffic collections to Lagos.. haha)

Pretty fucking novel approach, but they may have done a little better if they had picked a bigger jurisdiction. If it had simply been "New Jersy State Police/ NJ Turnpike violation", I may have opened the file and gotten burnt.

yeah such a good attempt to scam people... But after all they might want to try and target people who live in NY or visit...

Bama is a bit far away to be trying this

I received this too. I guess that TOWN COURT, CHATAM HALL., PO BOX 117
is not in any particular town, no zip code needed except for the malicious "code" that is likely in the "zip" file. Must simply be an attempt to get you to open the zip and then who knows what happens. There are a million stories yet to be told. I heard of a credit card number theft where the thief used the stolen credit card number to pay the mortgage on a house. there are at least as many stupid crooks as smart ones.

Isn't it just amazing how you can be tracked down by your email address these days?

Hell..half the time *I* can't remember what my email is but all the sex, drugs and winning lottery websites have it at their fingertips.

I got the same email a couple of days ago, and I found it incredibly funny because I don't even live in New York and havent been there in a couple of years.

I got this and laughed my ass off.
No exact code violation (trust me, if you got a printed ticket it would say what section of the code you allegedly violated)
No intersection or section of road where the alleged violation took place.
Just a date and time stamp, for all the people in the email.

Not to mention that:
A. I do not have car.
B. I am not a licensed driver.
C. I have never been to New York.

When I got this I was very scared I havnt got a ticket in probably five years and then this shows up. However I called the department and told me not only do they not send tickets on email, but unless you were in new York that day there's no way. So you can probably guess how happy I am that it's not real.

This is genius! This scam can also work on the idea that police can screw up and give out parking tickets to cars that haven't been on the road in a dozen years or give a speeding ticket to someone that died in five years ago.

If you don't contest it, they send it to collections.

This is the better part of the scam - because some recipients don't care if the charges are legitimate. They would open that attachment to fight it because they know that "ignorance = guilt", cops have fat fingers on keyboards, and the automated money-driven machine will certainly hit you in every way it is programmed to hit you.

Never owned a car or been in NY? No matter.

/think of it like a debt collector going nuts about a defaulted car loan you never had. It was never your problem, but now it is.

I received this in our American Legion Post email. Funny they can ticket an organization for speeding, what did our post suddenly grow wheels and an engine and go to NY without anyone noticing it?

Upload the zip file to http://www.virustotal.com/

and see what the report says. For some reason, virus total is experiencing heavy volume. I wonder if a bunch of people are uploading the same file now...

Also, you can e-mail it:

How do I start?

The requirements are very simple, you just need a valid email account and a file that you wish to analyze.

The sending process is as follows:

1. Create a new message with scan@virustotal.com as the destination address.
2. If you wish to receive the results as plain text, write SCAN in the subject field. If you wish to receive an XML attachment with the results, write SCAN+XML in the subject field.
3. Attach the file to be scanned. Such file must not exceed 20 MB in size. If the attached file is larger, the system will reject it automatically.

If you completed these steps correctly, you will receive an email with the file scan report. The response time will vary depending on the load of the system at the moment in which the file was sent.

Yes, pretty funny. Clever, too, in its own clumsy way.

It begs the question, how would the NYC police even know what email address to send a citation to? I have five different addresses that I use for different things. My Yahoo account isn't even in my real name. Or my real address.

My thinking too. Our email accounts aren't linked up to things like this (yet)

The crooks are playing a numbers game, and there is probably been some kind of return on this. I wonder how many of these things they hae to send out for each sucker who will respond?

I'm scared to do it trogdor.

But I googled the body of the message I got and apparently a lot of others did also.

I almost fell for this one, just happen to be in MD in a NY registered rental. I called the rental joint and they told me there were no tickets on the car. whow. then my mother who lives in a far off land playing in the farmville called me chewing me out for speeding. she too got the email and went to open it, I told her not to and she didnt, but I still took a licking, she knew somewhere someplace that I had done something wrong.
I have to say these kind of scams are bring families and friends together to chat about things other than the idiotic politicians not doing their given job.
Thank Skinnies

Do as troddor1 advised and email to virus total. It is safe to download as attachment AS LONG AS you do not open attachment. Just download and send to VirusTotal.

But no matter, if you do not send, I did it and it had 6 total viruses (Trojans) so these nigerian pricks are emailing viruses as ".exe" application files. It is NOT a ticket. You did not receive a ticket. POLICE WOULD NOT KNOW YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS. YOU WERE CORRECT IN RESEARCHING HERE.

IT IS A DANGEROUS EXECUTABLE WITH 6 VIRUSES.

DO NOT BELIEVE THIS EMAIL OR EXECUTE THE APPLICATION.

BEWARE OF CRIMINAL NIGERIANS!!!!

I have gotten this e-mail three times now the last was today and it is dated for October 10,2011 at 7:35 a.m., I was at work in Conroe, Texas at that time. The other two were for July 2, 2011 at 7:35 a.m. I have never been to New York. This did bother me because with my job if you get too many speeding tickets you get fired, I really need my job.
