which to do: Six Flags, Busch Gardens or Kings Dominion?
Posted by: Summer Parent ()
Date: May 24, 2011 04:54PM

We've had Six Flags season passes for our family for the past two years. Kiddos are now 7 (almost 8) and 11 (almost 12). The older kiddo is old enough and tall enough to ride the roller coasters on his own now; the younger is sort of in-between, but mostly sticks to the family/kid rides. We've had no problem with Six Flags, and have enjoyed it, but wondering if we should try something new this year. Haven't been to King's Dominion in about 10 years. Any better/worse than Six Flags? We live out in Centreville, so the drive to each is about the same. On most summer days we can drive to Six Flags in about 45 minutes, and the crowds never seemed to be that bad. I hesitate when I think about driving down I-95 during the summer with unexpected delays. Haven't been to Busch Gardens in about 20 years. Any suggestions, or are there other parks up north to consider? Never been to Hershey Park, etc. Thanks.

Kings Dominion has always been more fun than Busch Gardens.

Don't know anything about Six Flags, other than I hated that creepy old guy that used to be in the TV ads

Kings Dominion has many more rides but is an absolute smelly shit hole. Busch Gardens has got my family nod for the past 5 years, they have added a bunch of new rides over the past decade, and will remind you ascetically of Epcot Center, not PG County.

Kings Dominion is for young adults without parents and families in attendance
Busch Gardens is perfect for the family outing.

easy choice

If you can handle gansta wannabes, Six Flags

If you can handle the living hell that is 64 - Busch Gardens

If you can handle hillbillies and rednecks - Kings Dominion

LoLz I kid :)

I've never been to Hershey, either - I hear it's cool. And there's Sesame Place (offa I-95 in Jersey) and Great Adventure (offa I-195 in Jersey) both near Trenton, if you are up for that sorta trip. I think Sesame Place is only really for if you have little little kids, y'know?

Personally, out of the orignal 3 choices, I'd pick Busch Gardens, though. No reason why, I guess.

Our family is a Kings Dominion family. I can deal with the hillbillies, but not the ghetto from PG county. The KD waterpark is better. BG is boring.

Get the season passes. If you go twice, you come out ahead on the $$$

we liked Six Flags for the past two years because every time we went over the summer, it was never too crowded; and it was very family-friendly, considering I was there alone with kids under the age of 10. Only reason we're reconsidering is that they have no new rides. I've heard mixed things about King's Dominion, that it is more geared to older (teen/adult) crowds, that the older crowds can get a bit rowdy. That is the one thing that makes me hesitate...AND, the season passes are more expensive.

Actually Cosmo....Snyder was voted off the board and outta the company a while ago.

Right after their stock hit 64 cents a share and was de-listed on the NYSE.

Hershey is great for kids that age. If you are looking for a pure thrill park, go to Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio. Its a haul but well worth it! The accomidations are VERY affordable.

Six Flags is way too dangerous, being in shitty PG county. KD does have a nice free waterpark, and its about a 90 minute drive. BG can be done in one day, but prefer a 2 day trip. BG seems a little newer and lines are never too long.
But with either one of those you have to go down 95 which usually backs up going south in the summer.

You hit the nail on the head. The first time I went there was on
a weekday and it wasn't very crowded. The next time was on a
Saturday and it was packed with animals with boom boxes and
you're right. The parents (or whoever) drops them off with no
supervision. They acted tough and pissed in the water. I grabbed
my kid and left. She was too young to understand why then but
she knows now.

Busch Gardens or Kings Dominion. You can buy season passes for both if you plan to go more than once. There is Gray Wolf Lodge to which is a water park. I believe near Busch Gardens, Would consider that too maybe.

I've been to all three. BG is about 3 hours away, 6 round trip, which makes it a bit far for a day trip. If you are buying a season pass expecting to go multiple times it would not be the most convenient place to go. Times I went it seemed like the patrons were higher on the socio-economic scale than at 6F or KD. When we went lines for rides could get a bit long, but we always were there on weekends which I suspect were busier than weekdays. It probably had the best food of the three.

6F is extremely convenient, which can be a big factor if you are expecting to make multiple trips during the summer. Of the three it seemed like the crowds for rides were smallest there. Water park area did seem more crowded than at KD. I suspect that many of the locals probably use it in lieu of neighborhood pools. Always went there on weekdays, so I don't know if weekends were different. Comments about the patron base do seem to be on point, but I don't think we ever ran into any trouble there.

KD is about 1.5-2 hours away, which is still doable round trip during the day. The lines for a few rides can get a bit long, but there are enough decent rides that if you are willing to skip out on some of the longer lines you can still have a good time. Food sucks. Water park area is less crowded than at 6F. Tends to draw heavily from central Virginia with more teenagers, at least when I was there, but again I don't think I've ever witnessed any incidents.

Kings Dominion is not ghetto, it's in a rednecky part of the state, but it isn't dangerous.

August 20, 2010

WTVR-CBS6 in Richmond reports that a Kings Dominion worker has been arrested after being accused of inappropriately touching an 8-year-old boy.

Dong Wang, a 21-year-old exchange student fro China, is charged with aggravated sexual battery in connection with the incident, which happened several weeks ago at the theme park.

Wang was charged after police received a call from a Tennessee man who claimed his 8-year-old was inappropriately touched. It's unclear what exactly happened, but Wang's lawyer, Steve Coleman, says surveillance video shows his client lifting the child up onto a rail to help him play a game. The video also shows the 8-year-old kissing Wang on the cheek.

Coleman says he believes the charge Wang is facing is too severe, and is working with the Commonwealth's Attorney's office to try and get the charge reduced.

Wang is currently being held at the Pamunkey Regional Jail.

There are Dong Wangs at every amusement park, you should watch your kid and not have him handled by strangers.

Hershey Park is a VERY nice, clean park with plenty of cooing shade trees. They have a very good selection of roller coasters and very low gangsta/redneck level. Also, in the past, when you went to the park after 6pm to buy a ticket for the following day, they would give you admission to the park 6pm to closing on the day of purchase.

I've never been to Six Flags...only Busch Gardens VA and Kings Dominion VA. BG has fewer thrill rides than KD, but it also has better restaurants and more indoor shows and attractions, plus it's more plush and accommodating. If it is 100 degrees outdoors, then you can find more places to escape the heat at BG than KD, but with that being said, I am a roller coaster nut, so I prefer KD over BG, although BG has three thrill coasters that I could ride all day long - Apollo's Chariot, The Griffon, and Alpengeist in that order. KD has at least that many X2, but it is not so much about the food and scenery at KD as much as the rides, so if you love thrill rides and/or are entertaining teenagers, then go to KD. If you are doing the family thing with small kids, then go to BG or consider Disney World. For me it's much more about the rides, so I prefer KD over BG, but I cannot find fault with BG because it is such a beautiful park, and I love the German food at the Oktoberfest, plus there are enough thrill coasters there that I cannot complain. Plus, the staff there is over accommodating. I wish that the tram ride over to the brewery was still operational like it used to be long ago, though. That was a really neat perk of the park, and I can still remember how strong the hops smelled as soon as you exited the tram and entered the brewery. I don't know why it closed. I bought a $30 stein every time I visited there. Maybe it was a PR issue or some kind of Legal thing...who knows?

I've never been to Six Flags, but I've heard some bad things about our local one. Go figure, since it's in PG County. As for Busch Gardens, I've passed by it but never been in it, yet I've heard good things about it. Regarding Kings Dominion, I've been there multiple times, including during a Middle School day that had kids from all over VA there, and I've always enjoyed it. Even with all of the inner city kids there from Richmond and elsewhere, I never felt threatened or unsafe. Kings Dominion was always a blast as a kid.

I wouldn't go to this Six Flags if I had a free season pass. There are always problems with the people that go there, the rides break frequently, it's not cared for that well. KD is okay, good for rides, but a fair number of huge groups of kids that can be overwhelming for some people. BG better for shows, though they have a few good rides as well. Usually an older clientele with more money. Hershey is good, but only has two or three good big coasters, it's a nice change of pace from KD, but I wouldn't want to go repeatedly.

As an option for the summer, make a tour of the local water parks. There are several in Fairfax county alone. Or hit all the mini golf courses around. None of them are all that great, but it passes the time and can be fun.

He seems very bitter. I wish someone could talk to him, like a friend or something and steer his sails onto calmer seas. He strikes me as the type that when they retire, feeds the pigeons in the park, and curses them at the same time.

Why are all you guys saying that Kings Dominion is a shitty place? It's better than Busch Gardens, AND Six Flags... there are more roller coasters, and thrill rides at Kings Dominion. The teenagers that go there don't have any problems, and line jumping hasn't been an issure for me. You guys are just trying to put the park down, and you think your cool saying it smells like "ass" hmm, I say you should go there and recheck your heads. Because it DEFINITELY does not. Intimidator 305, Dominator, VOlcano, Drop Tower, and WIndseeker (2012) - You would have a lot of FUN in KD:) I know I do. And I work there, and play there.. the place doesn't get boring.

The best ride at KD is the gauntlet of black thugs that you must get through to reach your car.

Ha!!!!!!! I prefer the thugs to the white trash with their rat tails, cankles spilling out of their walmart shoes, and Tasmanian devil tshirts.

I used to love KD, but it's gone to shit in recent years...basically ever since they dropped Paramount from the name.
