Odd NFL Trivia Question

I was watching football with my girlfriends nephew who is 10 or 12. The fat little fucker is a regular savant, he can already tell time and tie his own shoes. I see big things in his future.
Anyway, the bastard stumps me with a question,, one I tried to Google with no luck at all. The old me would have just thrown him some nonsense answer and had been done with it. The new me really wanted to know the truth.
It was like 3rd down and 27. The question was "what's the most yardage a team ever needed for a first down?" Actually a pretty good query and it stumped me, and though I really don't have memory bank for obscure sports records, I really wish I knew. Theoretically a team could get a 10 yarder on offisides, a 15 yarder for unsportsmanlike conduct on the next play and then maybe get sacked on the next. I think I remember a team needing 37 yards for a first down once, but I can't speak definitively at all.
Anyone got my back on this?

Yeah, I would have guessed it has probably gotten that high with a few sacks and 15 yard penalties. I'd give my little toe for a definitive answer though, I think I am going to try that Yahoo answers and find a showoff who knows.

You need some pretty severe penalties on office to get a 15 yarder. Unsportsmanlike conduct or an aggressive face mask.
I've seen teams rack up 2 holding penalties in a row, but to take 30 or 40 yards in penalties on offense is tough.

I'm thinking a few penalties or big sacks, plus a fumble that is re-recovered for a huge loss.

I would hate to have seen the chain of events that put a team back 41 yards, but hey if was the Skins, I believe it.

Found this via google....Its college as opposed to NFL....
