Schools Recognize Islamic Holidays

As a Muslim and a high school senior at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, 17-year-old Dunia Kassay faces a tough choice every year on Islamic holy days: go to school or stay home to be with family and friends.

Tweet 12 people Tweeted this.1 person Dugg thisdiggdigg.
Yahoo! Buzz ShareThis .If she stays home, Kassay says, she will be forced to play catch-up and make up her school assignments. But if she goes to school, she will be neglecting what she feels is her religious obligation on holidays such as Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting.

“It’s really conflicting,’’ Kassay said. “Instead of fasting for a month and enjoying this really big day, eating and going to family’s houses, it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, hey, guys, I’ve got to go do my homework.’ ’’

But beginning next year, Cambridge public schools will attempt to make it easier for Muslim students to honor their highest holy days.

In a move that school officials believe is the first of its kind in the state, Cambridge will close schools for one Muslim holiday each year beginning in the 2011-2012 school year.

The school will either close for Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, depending on which holiday falls within the school year. If both fall within the school calendar, the district will close for only one of the days.

The school district’s decision, announced last month, was made as the national discussion about Islam continues, fueled by a Mosque proposal two blocks from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Florida preacher Terry Jones’s threat to burn a Koran. The discussion has also touched local schools, as Wellesley school officials drew criticism recently for a video that showed sixth-grade students kneeling during a prayer service at a Boston mosque during a field trip in May.

But Cambridge School Committee member Marc McGovern, who pushed for the Muslim holiday in city schools, said he thinks people need to take a step back from what he called hysteria and the stereotypes of all Muslims as terrorists.

Why not. How much education do you need to work a 7-11 anyway?

Just as long as schools don't start recognizing Wiccan holidays, I'm okay.

I think all businesses and schools should observe such a holiday. For the day, they can remove the toilet paper from the restrooms so everyone has to wipe their asses with their hands. Then, they can also remove the silverware from the dining room or cafeteria - so the students and employees can shovel their food into their mouth with flat bread. Finally, to top it off, they can hand out prayer rugs and everyone can move their desks aside so they can face the Mecca out of respect for Allah.

In all seriousness, this seems like the biggest bullshit holiday. Then again, about 20 years ago, I felt the same way when they started to recognize MLK day. When will the madness end?

I've got no problem with them giving the kids the day off. As far as I remember when I was in school they were allowed the day off, but school stayed open. I don't even have a problem with them closing the school for everyone on the holiday. Fair is fair, after all, and there is no denying school holidays are scheduled around the Judeo-Christian holidays, which is inherently unfair to those not of those religions or cultures. Fine. I'm all for all of this.

But don't quote some kid who is saying the whole school has to close because missing ONE DAY of school puts them oh-so-far behind everyone else and it's so hard to make up. Be honest about what this is about. Come on.

Wow, never saw racial problems coming from some idiot teabagger like T2T! Who could've imagined!

That being said, public schools shouldn't recognize religious holidays. Christmas is an American holiday, not a christian one. Get over it. We take off work to unwrap gifts and overeat. There's barely anything "christian" about our holiday.

No reason for religious holidays. If you want to take off for Eid al-Fitr, Rosh Hashanah, or Good Friday, that's cool: just take it on your own time.

Teabagger? You, my friend are a teabagger.

"tea bagging

the act of lowering one's balls onto someones face, or into their mouth while they are laying down. Kind of resembles dipping a tea bag into a hot cup of water."

TheMeeper, when are you going to come out of the closet?

I've never heard this kind of comeback on FFXU before.

This is GREAT !

From now on, children will have the day off to focus on hate crimes directed at muslims.

They should also give kids days off for Rastafarian, Buddhist, Santaria,
Hindu, Voodoo, Animist, Satanist, and all other religions holidays as
well so they won't have to go to school at all. They can stay home all
day every day to celebrate diversity and our property taxes should go
way down.

If it's one of these school systems that calls Christmas break "Winter Vacation" and they will signify that it's a Muslim religious holiday on the calander, yeah there's something wrong. Typical of the lefto mindset of "we hate everything religious but islam because we're scared,I mean tolerant"

But if we're looking at a large Muslim population in the school system who are going to miss the day anyway and slow down everyone, they should consider this acoomodation,

TheMeeper,

I've warned you in other threads not to label me or stereotype me. 1) I don't own a gun, 2) I don't go hunting, 3) I don't drive a pick-up truck.

However, you may call me a bigot if you choose. Then again, I'll bash white people as easily as I do any other race. So, would that really make me a bigot? Plenty of white people are idiots, just as there are plenty from other races, religions, etc. that F* up from time-to-time.

There, you have it!

Since you called me a teabagger, you must have had tea bagging on your mind. So, I posted the definition of tea bagging. So, are you really into tea bagging?

Exactly. The district should be able to decide for itself what kind of vacation schedule its students get.

In my tiny redneck hometown, students got the first day of fucking deer season off. They knew a large portion of the student body would be out, and rather have the parents make up some bullshit excuse about little Timmy being sick.

If they can do that for fucking deer season, I'm sure they can do that for a religion's holy day, especially if the majority of the student body is Muslim.

T2T, you're a bigot. It's not a big deal, lots of people are bigots. Just own up to it.

See, a bigot is someone who writes something like, "For the day, they can remove the toilet paper from the restrooms so everyone has to wipe their asses with their hands." Sorta like you did. That's a bigoted statement because obviously, it's a perpetuation of the negative stereotype that Muslims don't know what toilet paper is.

It's made even worse by the fact that you're talking about American Muslims. To assume that American Muslims don't use toilet paper or silverware is ignorant at best, and make-sure-you-wear-your-water-wings-in-the-pool retarded at worst.

But I'm sure you've got a lot of black friends.

Here's the example you should've used: look at the Mexicans. Go to any construction site and take a peek in the porta johns. Mexicans shit on the seat, wipe their asses and throw the toilet paper on the floor. But I don't mind. If I come across these incidents, I'll clean it up. After all, it is the white man's fault they are uneducated.

Well, then do you consider yourself gay? After all, I see many of your post where it is YOU that calls people tea baggers. Do you have your PhD in tea bagging since you seem to be the self-proclaimed expert in regards to it here on the forums?

How can I be labeled a bigot? I'm not focusing on one particular religion or race. At some point or another, they all irritate me. I'd actually refer to it as "Universal Descrimination" and not bigotry.
