* that kind of bridge is known to be fragile and need replacement

You have hills on either side of the bridge. Upon freezing and thawing the hills "move quite a bit" horizontally (REMEMBER NO HORIZONTAL TWIN BEAM). Also the foundation is in a (old) riverbed and you would guess they pylons (columns) are not down to bedrock - and they may move slowly down or tilt.

In any recently built bridge the columns are attached "FLOATING" (i'll place a $0 bet these were not) and the bridge ends are specially fit to allow sliding.

* INSPECTION WISE - we can all see the concrete shows signs of rot (from salt and the acid from fallen leaves)

I bet if i put a little baking soda and water on that concrete it'd slowly bubble as if it were soil with less than 7 low pH. (that's bad concrete likes pH 7 or higher ... ie think of Rome's problem with acid rain and preserving old statues old columns for tourism)

* we can all see that A DOUBLE TOUR BUS with persons in it would exceed a reasonably place weight limit on this bridge, had we in mind had all the factors above in mind and done that

The curb weights for these buses currently range between approximately 38,000 and 50,000 pounds, and fully-loaded weights range from approximately 56,000 to 65,000 pounds. or 33 metric tons (short tons) since i'm lazy

that bridge was built on a budge "decades ago" for a much smaller amount of traffic (LIKELY FOR SCENIC USE as well as future traffic hour alternate route) and not for heavy trucks ... i'm currently looking for the data to support that assumption.

I will say the bridge appears to be a scenic detour and built decades ago and was not intended for "loaded superbusses and heavy traffic" nor long life under "salted and leaf/acid conditions". As such they limited spending building it since a "heavy bridge" wasn't in the budget and or couldn't be justified at that place.

this horizontal beam stayed intact (it bent instead of snapping) (perhaps it is not jointed), the joints appear to be "well rivitted", a popular and reliable steal working method

what IS NOT SHOWN in any photo I can find is "the size and number of columns", which appear to be collapsed and hidden. one has to know (for reasons above) they were the failure point. on the other hand "blaming the columns" (stressed by freeze thaw horizontal motions - and rotted by mis-use - and in a stream bed perhaps causing shifting) ... is not fair since the columns were not made for heavy traffic - the sign says so. it was "a scenic route and a rush-hour alternate when trafic wasn't as bad", i'd say. i will say without seeing the columns that MIS-USE better describes "the problem".
