I lived in nyc after college from 2005-2010. I worked for an boutique investment firm that started junior analysts at $120k. Dad helped me buy a condo in Tribeca which cost $100k up front for a 2 bed 1.5 bath that cost $428k. Condo fees alone were $2k. Sucked balls and not having a car felt weird, but I was awestruck by the by the fact I was “big city living”. All the hottest clubs and points of interest were within a 10 minute cab ride. Women everywhere. The luster wore off 8 months in when I witnessed a homeless guy jump from a 11 story building and go splat 10 feet from me. Stuck around just cause the pay was good. Taxes were oppressive and people there are assholes regardless of their place in the socio economic stratum. This was pre recession before the whole financial sector went kaput. I can’t imagine what it’s like living there now.

The irony of course is that blacks constitute 19% of the population in NYC and over 30% in the Richmond-Petersburg area. In fact the highest population of blacks as a percentage of population is overwhelmingly in the Deep Southern cities.
