The IRS has a great many unprocessed income tax returns. Rather than admit how badly they fucked up their pandemic response they have actually started having IRS employees send out bullshit notices to taxpayers. You know it is bad when the IRS says they didn't receive the return, and yet they cashed the check enclosed with the return. Or when the IRS sends back a return because it wasn't signed, and the return they send back was in fact signed. My personal favorite so far is the 70 year old social security recipient who got a notice from the IRS that his social security number was not valid. If the number wasn't valid I think the SSA would have caught that. Doing this lets the IRS claim those returns were not processed due to taxpayer errors rather than IRS problems.

Last week we got a deposit for over payment of taxes on unemployment.
