The oil company's make about the same per gallon of product sold no matter the price.
The single biggest factor is how much they need to spend to just buy the crude oil to have in stock. Fact is, the federal government makes more per gallon of gas sold in this country than the oil companies do. Then there is state and local tax as well.
The current problem is not lack of product, it's the disruption in distribution that's the problem.

The pipeline company needed to get reimbursed for the ransom they paid
