DQ add from 1951, when the U.S. sent a chimpanzee into orbit because we didn't know if humans would survive weightlessness. The Russians sent a dog up first. The dog was a one way trip.
That's what the top scientists knew at that time. At the same time we were chasing the sound barrier with powered flight and a lot of top scientists at that time weren't sure if humans would survive the speed of sound, while sitting still inside an aircraft.
I sure am glad science has advanced. Of course the big issue still remains. It's not what scientists know today that's a problem, it's what they don't know about tomorrow.
