in the 1980's ONLY TEENS WORKED RETAIL, almost exclusively in suburban areas (mgr excluded - story on that snipped): teens, failed or poor college students during the summer and winter "mostly/only", and the occasional older drunk or mother getting a SECOND income for her butter money. your older people? they all had "real jobs". (note waitress is excluded, restaurants with them were something most people couldn't afford but on special occasions, tips paid well over rent back then)

repeat: in the 80's go to any fast food restaurant or clothing store or grocery store: teens or college kids (during off season) running the grunt jobs

when you see grown adults working fast food in the 80's: go way out of town (ie, front royal) to the rare mcdonals (the only one for 50 mi. in any direction): you see adults working (i infact queried one about the situation) and why is because it's way out in booney ville and there isn't a system of jobs way out there - there is farming and mining and such - they aren't short on land or work to do but cash to buy things (ie from stores not flea market) is short out there

suburban millenials don't understand USA, the 70's and 80's even remotely

in the early 80's there were still Americans building new outhouses

in the 80's there was no way to "protest for gov built toilets"

if your Mayor took bank loans in the name of the city to build public infrastructure (ie, to create jobs) that weren't funded by a local business exporting goods (ie, a factory or lumber mill)? when the bill came in (which is yearly) he'd be ARRESTED and the difference would be taken out of the retirement pay of the whole town (in fact that happened and one town that did it in the 80's was covered on 60 minutes)

some areas (NYC) and political families did it and "are still on the run": hillary and bill specialized in protecting those people from (creditors, lawsuits, and such)
