Concerns with Verizon
Posted by: Do not call us ()

With both Verizon FIOS/wireline and Verizon Wireless sides, at times customer service not doing what is right for the customer, even for reasonable requests. Recent wireless technical issue with Samsung phone product, not even 2nd level technical support knew the answer, and eventually found the answer on social media. With something that should be simple as an order change of FIOS services, again a few hours on the phone, so upsetting helping an older non tech minded relative in tears after the call, even after speaking with a call center supervisor. Verizon's cost cutting over the years hurts the customers, and learned over 20% of their workforce was let go earlier this year or in the process of happening.

Verizon also lost many landline customers, plus those using steaming services instead of FIOS/cable TV. In addition going forward, revenue and cost pressures with Verizon:
- Over $100 billion in debt being one of the largest debt loads of any company in the USA, much of that from acquiring British Telecom years ago.
- Loss of customers with turn off of CDMA wireless service later this year. So far, that has not been well communicated, and perfect storm come later this year during the holidays and the winter when customers, especially with older flip phones are stranded with non working phones which expecting damaging news media heyday.
- Roll out of 5G wireless service, quite labor intensive and expensive with cells no more than 2000 feet apart, plus if read thread on howardforums.com Verizon Wireless subforum, some question whether many millions will buy into it at $10 monthly higher price when 4G gives adequate speed. Verizon with some smaller digital ventures have not had much success.

Is this the kind of company you want to deal with? Goliath is already being chipped away, they would have more customers if they did things mostly right for the customers. MCI did, but failed when lost the foresight of getting into cellular in the late 1990s. With Verizon, with lot of hours spent getting answers to questions and issues resolved over the phone (Googling not always have answers), one cannot live your life for Verizon nor is Verizon your god.

I recently had to call Verizon to change my service, and the recording kept it will be about 20 minutes, and I ended up on hold for over 60 minutes. Fuckers!

4G will be around for quite a while. 5G is not an overnight thing. I'm not sure about cell towers having to be no more than 2000 feet apart. That would be economically unviable.

People are going to have to get over 2G. Sorry, but things do eventually move forward and 2G is from 1991.

Right, so 2000 feet. But will cell phone rates ($$$) support that? Heavy competition right now on calling plans. If the $$$ can't support the dream of 5G rollout, then they can keep dreaming. They'll try to force it, but if no one is footing the bill, it's not going to happen.

Mint Mobile plan and a $150 android knockoff.

Their mobile plan is $250 PER YEAR (8 gigs a month, unlimited call and text).

That's the way the industry is going. Do you really think you can deploy a mesh of backpacks all over the place (2000 feet apart) for the revenue generated from plans like mint mobile's?

Not gonna happen. Cell phones are now a commodity. 5G is not a MUST HAVE. Just my opinion.

What other choices does one have? This explains it well as far as wireless service http://www.city-data.com/forum/cell-phones-smartphones/3024528-your-favorite-cell-phone-service-company.html

So sad the phone market, you got to support company's profits in stuff that is plain wrong, to get your service.

https://www.2ndvote.com/company-scores/
Type in either Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Cricket Wireless, Cox Enterprises, or Charter Communications all rated between 1 and 2 (morally tainted).

The only ones with great 5 star scores here are smaller ones Charity Mobile (uses Verizon's network) and Patriot Mobile (uses Sprint's network).

Actually contacted Charity Mobile https://www.charitymobile.com/ recently, which had questions before signing up for service. Very impressed!
- A person answered the phone after three rings. No voice response menu. Person was kind, helpful answering a few critical questions had within minutes, patient, and no sales pressure. Also emailed them with a couple of follow up questions forgot to ask with detailed helpful response back in two hours (this was during business hours) or expect within a day or so if something needs more time to research.
- Most Verizon Wireless 4G phones, if bought from Verizon and/or unlocked, and also phone numbers can be ported to them. Most ports of phone numbers in 5 minutes to an hour, though especially if not have account info or password, this with any port can delay process for days. Call them for specifics (helpful if you have phone IMEI #). Of course, older CDMA phones cannot be ported, as that network is being taken down by Verizon year end. Charity Mobile also sells Verizon Wireless phones listed on their website.
- Their prices are competitive, often even better than Verizon - https://www.charitymobile.com/plans.html
- If you yourself or have an older or non-techy person on your family plan, they can restrict data on a flip phone and even text messages.
- You can create an account to pay online. Also they mail monthly paper bills if you prefer that.
- Lot of other questions answered at https://www.charitymobile.com/support.html or can contact them at
https://www.charitymobile.com/help.html by phone or email.

Wow, over 7000 better business bureau complaints and 44000 laid off (that's 50K)! This does not count the previous rounds of Verizon layoffs. And the 7K BBB complaints, which are filtered as legitimate complaints (at least Verizon's answering many of those, after much earlier customer jumps and hoops and much wasted hours and days of time beforehand), are only a tiny portion of those who never made their frustrating customer service and billing concerns made known to the BBB. Lot of other customer complaints on other review websites.

Interesting reading of scattered few dozen of 7405 complaints, and because of so many complaints, BBB only publishes 1 out of every 5 noted at the top of the 1st page, so that's at least around 37,000 complaints with the BBB.

Noticing a pattern, some people spending so many hours, even days with their Verizon issues sometimes, it should be called Whole Life (or some percentage of it). Similar to Whole Foods before being taken over by Amazon, was called Whole Paycheck by some.

The real question is are the laid off workers going into other companies that are ISP's and cellular providers like Verizon? The answer is no. The market is shrinking because cell phones are now a commodity and the business is cut throat.

That happens when there's an abundance of something. Layoffs are sometimes necessary. You can't employ the same number of people as before if a market is shrinking, becoming super competitive or there's not the demand for that product/service. High speed internet is ubiquitous. How the hell are you going to support the same number of people without new installs?

Well they did pay the labor and materials to deploy it, right?
