"The Secret"
Posted by: Numbers ()

By now I'm sure you've all heard of the latest cult called "The Secret", led by James Arthur Ray. If not, his theory to make money is referred to as "the laws of attraction". If you think negatively, it will bring you bad things and if you only think nice, happy thoughts, you'll live in bliss.

Well, he's going to jail now over the sweatlodge deaths that occurred last year in which 3 people died as a result of staying in a sweatroom sauna of death for too long as he continued to ramble on about positive thinking and making $200,000 per session. Apparently several people were fainting, vomiting and generally feeling sick, but he urged them to suck it up and even chastised those that left.

I guess he must have had a lapse in his positive thoughts and fantasized of going to prison or maybe he thought prison would be a happy place.

I'm fascinated by people that insist on putting their own responsibility on the spiritual world instead of with themselves. Their convinced some spirit or life force is going to magically solve all their problems instead of using rational thought to correct the situation.

I'd go as far as to say the "Secret" was actually a Satanic cult.

At least there will be no more sweat-workshops.

Law of Attraction has nothing to do with the "spiritual world," and I'm not sure what the sauna deal had to do with it either. Law of Attraction is not satanic, in fact it is pretty much agnostic.

So yes it is SATANIC.

I dont believe in anything when it comes to religion. However, I think of The Secret as a variation of the String Theory. Everything is connected. That is something I do believe in. Think positive and good things will come your way.

Everything IS connected, but that isn't spiritual, it's factual. We're all matter, and matter is part of the cosmos.

The laws of attraction is spiritual, in that positive thinking implies that some force of nature or beyond, whether real or psychologically will aid you in making whatever you want to happen. Either way, it's simply a way of avoiding personal responsibility for situations not to your liking.

Don't you mean who or what created the cosmos? At this point, we aren't even sure if there is just one cosmos.

Well, there are two ways you can go about answering this question.

a) You can go the easy route and just give the old "God created everything, because something can't come from nothing" response. But then you HAVE to ask, "What created god?"
If we are supposedly gods children, then why would he even bother making all the other planets, stars, galaxies, black holes, etc... Seems like a big waste of time. No wonder he had to rest on the 7th day.

b) Try to figure out the answer by using logic and scientific reasoning. We've come a long way by using this method. If we still used method (a), we'd still think the Earth is flat and the stars were just lights in the sky that can predict our future.
The bottom line is we will NEVER figure it out by sticking our heads in the sand and wishing all the bad things away.

Okay mr. Scientist.

What is electricity?

Where does it come from?

How about gravity?

What is it?

These are things that your pee-brain can't comprehend. So don't try.
The bible was a good indicator as to God's opinion of how smart we are, or at least have been for the past 2 thousand years but the Bible served its purpose from the time and people it was intended for. So don't use the litteralist interp of the Bible to discredit shit. Because I am no "litteralist" either.
So I suggest you go back to spiritual school and re-tool your mind to accept that which you (or I) DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

If you go back to religions and belief systems prior to the Bible, it is pretty clear that it used many of the same ideas and myths for much of the background given to Jesus and other stories about how God worked and the bestowing of his "gifts" and wrath.

In the early days, many religions were developed as a way to control the populace or to exert local control by leaders. So while the Bible is a good source of stories to teach by, it is by no means a definitive text on what God or Jesus could have been all about. If you were to believe anything about religion, it is that you can never know, or understand much of anything about God - so how would it be possible to truly write anything as a book of man and actually make it contain anything close to approximating what a "God" would really be able to do, conceive, etc. And of course, that is the point - so that you can always refer to some new unknown thing as a "mystery" of God, thus keeping the masses in check by making them believe that God is behind everything.

lol, you are dopey. That's like calling my recipe for chili satanic because it doesn't include God or Jesus in the instructions.

And you are still further incorrect, Law of Attraction does not credit the individual with its results. It requires that a person internally facilitate intended consequences but the execution of it isn't by the person.

In response to critics who asked if Holocaust victims were, in Ray's view, thinking incorrectly, Ray stated in a 2007 interview: "I know people of the Jewish faith and heritage who don't necessarily believe the Holocaust was bad. Now that might be shocking to you but I have people on record who have said, hey there's a lot of good things that came out of that, a lot of lessons, a lot of opportunities for the world." In that interview, Ray answered about personal responsibility, "I fully know, for me, that there is no blame. Every single thing is your responsibility ... and nothing is your fault. Because every single thing that comes to you is gift ... a lesson."

I actually had the "pleasure" of watching The Secret. After about 2 minutes it was painfully obvious that this was just another way to take money from desperately unhappy people...

As for the "Law of Attraction", it doesn't have to be a spiritual thing, Numbers. What I got from all the "think positive and positive things will come to you" talk is that the way you think shapes the way you view "reality". Basically, if you choose to be optimistic, you will see the "good" in things around you. If you choose to be pessimistic, it comes as no surprise that you will see the "bad" in things... Notice I said "choose"...

If you choose to view matters, such as this one, as a way for people to pass the buck to an invisible spiritual entity, that is a reflection of your own perspective. Another, equally acceptable, way to view this is as a mechanism for people to learn that they have control over their lives and their own destiny. Basically, your thoughts can influence your behavior... Some people don't realize that they can actually control their own thoughts...

Keep in mind, I'm not defending "The Secret" and the twisted pushers behind it. It is all an industry, they sell something to people who think they need it. I just think you are narrow minded when it comes to the message that these "spiritual" movements are relaying. Instead of trying to find some validity, any validity really, in these ideas, you are concerned with belittling the people who may actually be helped by the discovery of them.

Do you think that evolution contradicts the existence of a god?

To summarize my point, we will probably never be able to prove the existence of a god. On the other hand, we will probably never be able to prove that god doesn't exist. Your view that a god CANNOT exist is one that you have come by without any proof. In other words, you have faith in the idea that god doesn't exist.

You are not concerned with "truth" or knowledge. You are concerned with preserving your own beliefs at all costs.

That's true, but it's because there is Zero evidence that any of it actually works. It can also be harmful.

Yes.

I never said or implied that another life form with higher intelligence cannot exist. It certainly can, but until we have some evidence, it's ridiculous to base your way of life around it. One thing that I am personally convinced of though, is that that higher form of being is NOT the biblical or Quranic god.
And just to add to that, we all better hope I'm right.

> Do you think that evolution contradicts the

Yes, at least the biblical god. In fact, just about everything contradicts the biblical god.

True, but we can be sure that if it is the biblical god in charge, we're all fucked.

The word "god" is where I have the most problems. In my opinion, no one and nothing deserves to be worshipped and anyone or anything that expects it is insane.

Mostly wrong. I have serious doubt about it and really for hope mankinds sake that one doesn't exist. I never claimed there couldn't be a higher form of life out there somewhere.

Bullshit! Truth and knowledge are the only things I'm concerned with. What are you concerned with?

Oh ok, that's what I thought you meant when you were talking about how ridiculous it is to believe in a god. You can understand how some people may refer to the higher intelligence as a "god" though, right?

> It

I agree with you on this. I hate being forced to behave and think a certain way... I don't even like our laws...

Ok, one of the things I was trying to figure out about you was whether or not you had issues with all things biblical, or all things god.... (in this sense, feel free to exchange the word "god" for "higher intelligence")

> Yes, at least the biblical god. In fact, just

Thank you for specifying which concept of god you are talking about. I think much of this dialogue could have been avoided if you were more specific...

> True, but we can be sure that if it is the

Maybe, though, supposedly, he did create us all in his image... maybe he'd like all the things we do?

> The word "god" is where I have the most problems.

I can think of a few things that should be worshiped!... If you catch my drift?

Again, thanks for specifying...

> Bullshit! Truth and knowledge are the only things
> I'm concerned with.

Ok, that was just my basic impression of you based solely on the tone of your religious rantings. I actually think you are one of the more rational people on this board, but you seemed to be acting too impulsively to be rational on the subject of religions.

> What are you concerned with?
> Do tell. What exactly do you believe?

Why, thanks for asking!

I believe that we, as humans, don't know shit. If people want to practice religion, I don't think any less of them. If they don't, I don't think less of them. I believe most Christians have a tendency to be simple minded and irrational, with a very black-and-white idea of what "good" is (Church's Chicken reference not intended)... While most atheists have a tendency to be a tad arrogant.

I don't believe that practicing a religion makes you a mindless zombie, I don't even think it's particularly dangerous. Actually, if you took most of the religious writings as strictly literature, I think lots of people could use the lessons as metaphors and apply them to improve their lives.

People will manipulate other people regardless of what religion, if any, they practice. I believe it's those people who are dangerous.

I also believe it's important to eliminate contradictions from our lives.

I believe, if more people would compartmentalize their emotions and think rationally, that the world would be a "better" place

...But I think the world, as is, has a certain charm to it.
