West Virginia's employment numbers have risen thanks to more coal, natural gas and construction projects, but young people say they need more diverse career options in order to stay in the state.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest report on employment and unemployment data, West Virginia has experienced steady increases in employment in construction, manufacturing and trade. But employment gains in business, education and finance have remained stagnant, and the lack of career diversity is one reason why the state's population is dropping.

Spenser Wempe, 26, was born in Shepherdstown, attended West Virginia University, represented the state in 2011 as Miss West Virginia and has the state's motto, "Montani Semper Liberi" ("Mountaineers Are Always Free") tattooed on her arm. Still, she left for Washington, D.C., earlier this year, a move she says was "more of a necessity than a desire."

"The industries that have thrived in the state are not necessarily the ones I find myself in," said Wempe, who works as the communications director for the Rural Community Assistance Partnership, a nonprofit that supports infrastructure projects in rural communities across the U.S. "I think if we want to see long-term success for the state of West Virginia that really means diversification."

Wonder if 3000 illegals at the border would work those jobs for $4 an hour?

I grew up in SW VA, coal miner jobs are about the most brutal and physical jobs in existence. The toll it takes on your body and your lungs is no joke and you realistically are done by 40 once your back gives.

Not to mention black lung and all the other coal miner health issues. You're dead by 60 if the alcohol and meth don't kill you first.

West Virginia should reassess the state potential for tourism and vacation land ourtdoors type economy, after they clean up all the mine wastes and replant all the damaged mountaintops. That would give people a change to run their own businesses or participate in cleaning up their own home state of all the pollution. If they fine the fake doctors pushing pills, sue the big pharma for pushing the free pills and kickbacks to the doctors, and state passing laws to control what opium etc is allowed to be used for and limit the use and if someone gets hooked, have it by law the granting doctor has to pay for the rehab of the patient he gets addicted, this would possibly make a dent in it. A state lottery could be started to use the incoming funds for the cleanup jobs. If they cleaned things up and invited retirees to settle there like Arkansas does, and upped the schools quality there, it would turn into an area like Western N C or Missouri/Ark mountain areas.

Anyone can work for 4 bucks an hour when your getting food stamps, welfare housing assistant e, ssi, the list is endless. They send that 4 bucks an hour back to thier country

Maybe they could get into the business of soybean farming, I hear there’s a lot of opportunity for free govt money and you don’t even have to harvest the stuff you planted!

Nobody wants to see coal mined areas. The sulfur smell reaks ass. The water is tainted with mercury. Certainly, don't drink any of the well water in WV! That water is full of chemicals pumped out of coal mines and used in fracking.

Ask yourself 'will we be burning coal in 50 years?' The obvious answer no, not in any substantial amount if at all. So then ask 'what will replace coal' and you have the answer to the future. Jobs, revenue, and environment all will be in areas other than the 75k coal jobs. Who will lead the innovation and production of alternative energy sources? At the moment it looks the the money and jobs for developing those is going to go to China.


Lets change that, lets insist the USA create the jobs and innovation for the future.

Young people are smart. They're not shitty baby boomers waiting to dig coal and voting for a New York con artist with such promises.

Trump might as well of created more WV jobs by opening more WV toxic waste dumps.
