AMD announces 7 nm CPU - 1/2 that of Intel's 14 nm

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) is an American multinational semiconductor company based in Santa Clara, California (was out of Texas like Intel in the past if I remember, like Texas instruments is (or was?)).

reportedly (no source) Intel continues to struggle with its 10nm manufacturing process, which is delayed until late 2019

If AMD can field 7nm processors early next year, it will mark the first time in the company's history. But that's exactly the problem.

IT'S JUST AN ANNOUNCEMENT, NOT A PRODUCT. INTEL MAY EVEN BEAT THEM TO THE RELEASE FOR ALL WE KNOW.

meanwhile - Apple Computer has released Mojave and devices it didn't even announce until release: on schedule. many new products consumers have begged for. (apple runs %100 usa boards and chips mostly - and use both intel and amd, excellent and simple to use multi-media multi-device, unix enthusiasts like it, they promote real security and user privacy)

the problem with Promise hardware (asian brand). they rarely came through on promises, were quick to print promises of future driver upgrades on boxes.

cheap motherboard with Promise chip that never got full drivers let alone leveraging codex and apps for (linux, win10, etc)

low cost computer (equal if you price functionality / $) always has drivers fully leveraged software utilizing the hardware chips without any hacking and trouble free

i only ever used PC because i could not afford one - until i began where i could get a used one

Not something I would buy. That'll put out a lot of heat.

Let someone else face the early problems.

Seagate makes heady prediction: 50 TB drives early 2020's, 100 TB drives by 2025

USA Seagate already as a 1 TB per sq in technology (available). If we take an in^2 to be 645e16nm, and divide by 1TB we get ...

a 645 nm technology compared to chips (which have a very limited die area where hdd have no real limit anyone would be concerned with)

Seagate has never failed to drop jaws, i think.

i don't know if they've announced the thermal requirements yet :)

very true.

Apple desktops use laptop energy consuming technology: to do this they have to use "actually better" technology that is fast without getting really hot.

(note to gamers - imac are usually a few years behind in gaming support given a set price range so don't get one for the reason of playing the newest game releases or for wide game support - it's not like getting an iphone it's specialized for adult stuffs)

Is Intel's CPU business crumbling under the 7nm pressure from AMD ...

oh you can guess who wrote that article. and AMD employee. shopping 4 pc parts is fun!

Sort of. As density increases, we drop the voltage which reduces the thermal requirements. That's also partly necessary to get the signalling speeds up. It's roughly twice as dense. 49/100. So not an order of magnitude increase but still 7nm is going to be challenging. I expect them to miss the deadline.

AMD doesn’t make shit. It’s done by TSMC in Taiwan.

If you want to pay 3X the price for a name, go ahead. I stick with Intel platforms and Android.
