Obama cannot afford to confront or compete with Trump directly. When Trump defeats him twice he will be finished and of no use to anybody going forward. His reputation would be ruined and he would be relegated as a loser for the rest of his life. As it is now he can still pretend he was somebody important.

22nd amendment. Person can only be elected POTUS two times and serve 8 years. If they become POTUS without being elected, like LBJ after the Kennedy assassination, they can serve two years plus the 8 years if they are then elected and re-elected. 10 years total.

Obama cannot be elected POTUS again.
