Russians launched this operation back in 2014. Supposedly these indictments are filled with details about what the Russians did and how the U.S. was able to learn about it and compromise their efforts.
Trump still denies the Russians interfered and according to his own FBI Director has not ordered that anything be done about this to stop it.

One really needs to go at the Magnitsky Act to understand the furor of the oligarchs. Russia is a kleptocracy - far worse than, let's say, the kleptocratic state of Illinois and the city of Chicago, places which, for this country, are really troublesome. Theft and corruption is so thoroughly embedded in corruption that the only way to keep stolen wealth is to move it out of the country - like, as in to the West where property rights are still (largely) respected. I mean, what good is it to steal in Russia if you have to keep your wealth in Russia? It can be stolen again, and again. Think Hermitage Capital (of Bill Browder fame) on steroids. The Russian elites don't really know what to do about this, because, well, even with millions in lobbying their cause is a lost cause. So they decide to thrash about "sowing discord" with our elections and our political system, thinking that somehow they can make the US as dysfunctional and as up for sale as their own system of Government happens to be.
Kudos to Mueller for fingering these guys - query whether any of them will be here to prosecute - but it does make me wonder - we didn't need a special prosecutor's office to bring these kind of charges, and should have been more vigilant in general in terms of policing this activity.

Does anyone really think there still wouldn't be "social discord" in social media if not one Russian had pitched in? I count the affect as negligible.
