Tipping on a take-out order?

When I order takeout for myself from a full-service restaurant, that's usually an appetizer, a soup or salad, an entree and a dessert. I don't tip and nobody gives me grief.

Last week, the firm that I work at had a big case and since I am the most recent hired, I had to pick up dinner. It was a $900 bill.

Before I left, I asked my boss for another $100 for gratuity. He laughed and said, "You're picking up take out, kid. You don't tip on takeout." I then informed my boss I was not picking up a food order of that size without taking a gratuity.

The senior partner heard all of this and came storming into my office and said, "Goddamnit, go down there and pick up dinner, don't tip and bring it back here so we can all fucking eat!"

When I went to pick up the food, the woman at the counter looked like I had just kicked her dog. I just shrugged and said, "My boss didn't give me any money for tip..." Without hesitating she said, "You work in law firm...you don't have any money yourself?" I just grabbed the food and left.

I got back to the office and told my boss that I was never picking up food for the office again without providing them a gratuity. And he just looked at me menacingly and said, "Yeah you will..."

What the hell do I do now?

Punch him in the face and tell him, as he's lying there in a pool of his own blood, "No. I won't."

Outback Steakhouse is down with Satan. Restaurants should have a tip jar for carry out.

I don't usually tip when I pick up an order for myself or the family. When I place large orders for our firm with restaurants we do tip if the restaurant didn't charge a separate prep fee. Other law firms do the same, and I know this because I have seen the bills.

$100 on a $900 bill is excessive though.

It's unnecessary. They don't have to clean up after you if you are carrying out. They literally just make the food, and you take it to your car. Now, if they decide to take $900 worth of food and carry it to your car, a tip would be nice to show your appreciation.

However, as the above poster said, $100 is a really excessive tip.

You should be happy about your free lunch.

Do you mouth breathers have any fucking clue how much labor is involved with bagging up and packaging $900 worth of food to go? It's a lot more than plating it and serving it...and at the same time, as was mentioned, the wait staff is not cleaning your table, setting your table, clearing your plates and refilling your drinks.

I think A TIP is warranted here...but not the usual 15-20%. A $100 tip on a $900 bill would be slightly north of 11%. I think that's reasonable. AND? Make sure the tip is cash, handed directly to the person who did the most work packaging up the food. If you add a tip like that to a credit card transaction or just hand it to anybody...it will not get to the right person.

I would also consider if this is a place your firm frequents...either take out or dine in. You get what you pay for in this life. If you went above and beyond that 11% on a take out order tip...anybody and EVERYbody associated with the firm who orders from there would be treated like royalty.

And if you choose NOT to tip on an order of that scope...I do NOT envy your future diarrhea on your next visit. You may just look out and see a bunch of mopes working in that restaurant but, I promise you...they know who tips well and who's a jabroni douche-canoe.

Is your law firm run by a crowd of 20-something newly graduated self-serving gen-X law students from somewhere down in the back country? Perhaps they have not been in the NOVA area long enough to find out what certain restaurants (where huge services like "group catering" are NOT AVAILABLE as a separately run operation from the in-house dining customer base)-- will do to their "drive-in-drive-out- customers) who do not deliver a tip for a truckload of quickly prepared food to order for an office building full of "entitled heavily moneyed assholes" the next time(s) these customers order from them again. (Think about the level of mischievous stuff that has been going on with the food at a major, once well-loved and popular Mexican type restaurant chain over the past few years...).

You have a few choices open to you. While the perception of "lawyer" is odious to most people, I know that there are some firms that run an ethical operation, staffed with people who are truly interested in trying to assist others instead of run them into the ground. Start doing some networking on your free time. If you find several firms that get rave reviews from the people who have used their services, slip them a application after you have been at your current firm one or two years. Meanwhile, try to find out if the workers at your current place would mind pooling a dollar apiece to give a tip. If not, and you have to return to the same restaurant again, speak with the owners there and inform them of the situation and that you can do nothing to change it, but suggest to the restaurant that they tack on an extra fee for large fast food orders from businesses that are expected to be picked up quickly, and make it as part of their normal "special services fee." They can put that info on their menus for the corporate crowd. Or add it to the bottom line of the credit card if you are using the corporate card. Around NOVA nowadays most restaurants near large business buildings already add these fees on to orders. One near us that had really great food added 3 fees on to just small delivery orders. If they aren't doing that to protect themselves they will soon be left out of their servoce tip cuts. I don't think restaurants around here are paying 15$ an hour yet...

I am fairly certain we have a troll that is playing off the Outback waitress story.

We discussed this at lunch today and agreed the blame falls on the restaurant. Even with patrons that do tip there is going to be a huge difference in determining the value added by the person who checks, packs up and delivers the order to you. 5%, 10%, normal tip %, a flat per person amount. Plus the person sent to pick up the order is usually a flunky who is not used to casually dropping $500 and may not have discretion to pay anything extra. Set a minimum gratuity for large carry outs, tell the patron when the order is placed and everyone knows what to expect.

Most full-service restaurants have an auto-gratuity on parties of 8+ people. Time to put that shit on takeout, too.

How bout doing your job well and then getting a tip?
This is the issue w living in an area that has stable IT employment-the servers at restaurants are fukin idiots!!
Do your job rather than worrying about a tip!
No one asked you to be a substance abused in the first place to land this shitty job....
